Van alle premier cru's van Bordeaux is Haut-Brion de grootste charmeur, altijd elegant en verfijnd en altijd in topconditie, jong of oud. Haut Brion is het oudste en historisch gezien het kleurrijkste wijngoed van de Gironde - hier maakte men in de 17e eeuw de eerste Bordeaux van één wijngaard, voor het eerst in Londense koffiehuizen geschonken en geprezen door vele vooraanstaande schrijvers. In 1935 werd het wijngoed gekocht door Clarence Dillon, een Amerikaanse bankier. Hij investeerde grote bedragen in de renovatie van de chai en de wijngaard. In 1960 werd Haut-Brion de eerste premier cru waarbij de houten vaten werden vervangen door roestvrijstalen tanks. In 1983 kocht de familie Dillon het aangrenzende Château la Mission Haut-Brion. Haut-Brion is vrijwel altijd de snelst rijpende en toegankelijkste van de premier cru's maar die ongedwongen, jonge charme is bedrieglijk, want de wijn rijpt prachtig.
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, 2nd vin du Château Haut-Brion is de tweede wijn van Ch. Haut Brion, die vroeger 'Bahans Haut Brion' heette. De naam 'Clarence' is een hommage aan de Amerikaanse Bankier Clarence Dillon die in 1935 het domein kocht. Vandaag is het zijn afstammeling de prins Robert de Luxembourg die er directeur en eigenaar is. De tweede wijn is van zeer hoogstaand niveau en kan wedijveren met de eerste wijnen van vele andere Pessac Léognans. Dit is een magnum van 1.5 liter
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2019 is een blend van 49% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon aangevuld met Cabernet Franc dus de meer klassieke versie van de Clarence Haut Brion. Diep granaatpaars gekleurd, opent de wijn zich met een zeer ernstige neus van aardse tonen met bewerkte net omgeploegde grond, truffels, kreupelhout en gemalen rotsen - die plaatsmaakt voor noties van chocolade gebak, kirsch en aalbessen met vleugjes cassis en potloodkrullen. De smaak is vol, de smaak is energiek, fris, elegant met lagen rood en zwart fruit met een zachte, ronde textuur en een levendige muntachtige afdronk.

Aromas of rich, plummy fruit, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and toasty oak preface the 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy wine with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and powdery tannins. Ample and enveloping, it's more demonstrative than its counterpart, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion from across the street.
Jean-Philippe Delmas is delighted with his 2019s, and justly so, as this rich, dramatic and unusually powerful vintage is a great success for Château Haut-Brion (and its neighbor, La Mission Haut-Brion). In the vineyards, a touch more Cabernet Sauvignon is being planted these days, but the evolution is subtle, as the 2019 blend remains very much in line with tradition at this address, at 49% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc. That predominance of Merlot, combined with Haut-Brion's warm mesoclimate, have delivered an above-average alcohol level, labelled at 15%. On the white side of the ledger, we can expect a touch more Sauvignon Blanc in the future, as Delmas notes that Sémillon tends to lose its acidity rapidly in warm vintages. In both colors, the vineyard team are working to mitigate the effects of climate change and minimize the quantities of copper employed in treatments throughout the year. In the cuvier and chai, winemaking remains very classical, with fermentation in Haut-Brion's proprietary two-tier stainless steel tanks, designed to maximize the quantity of high-quality free-run juice; malolactic fermentation in tank; and maturation in new oak barrels, some 80% of which are produced in house by Séguin Moreau (complemented by purchased barrels from Demptos and Taransaud). White grapes are whole-cluster pressed with great attention to pH, the musts protected with dry ice, and bottled with some 25 parts per million free sulfites, without much in the way of dissolved carbon dioxide.

This is very beautiful with pure blackcurrant and rose-petal aromas, together with wet earth and black truffle, following through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with ultra-fine tannins that coat the mouth and deliver a fantastic impression. The complexity of flavor is so satisfying in the finish. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Dark and brooding, Le Clarence is marked by its brooding intensity and youthful reticence. It is far from an easygoing second wine. Black cherry, graphite, incense, spice, leather and game emerge, but only over time. This is impressive, but it needs cellaring.

The 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is fabulous. All the signatures of the Grand Vin come through in a smaller-scaled, more approachable style than found in its sibling. Smoke, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and spice are some of the many notes that enrobe the palate. Backward and yet full of intrigue, the 2019 will be easy to enjoy young, but it also clearly has the stuffing to age for years. Readers will find a wine endowed with tremendous character. Wow!

The 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion offers more red fruit on the nose than the La Chapelle de La Mission, perhaps more vibrant and expressive at this early stage. Touches of orange sorbet come through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and forward. A hint of dark chocolate appears towards the generous finish that develops more structure after three or four hours in the glass.
