De familie Rochioli verbouwt sinds eind jaren '50 druiven op hun landgoed. De wijngaard wordt nu beheerd door de derde generatie. Van de100% Chardonnay persen ze hele trossen voorzichtig voor fenolische delicatesse. Inheemse gist en volledige inheemse malolactische fermentatie vinden plaats in vaten, met sur lies bâtonnage. Na 20 maanden rijping in 25% nieuwe François Frères en Taransaud Beaune Franse eikenhouten vaten, werd de Chardonnay traditioneel geklaard voor helderheid en textuur en gebotteld zonder filtratie.
De 2018 Ramey Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is jeugdig omwonden met zachte witte perzikgeuren en een vleugje hazelnoot, bloemen en gemalen schelp. Het gehemelte is pittig en mineraal gedreven om te beginnen, en opent naar een zachte, royaal geparfumeerde afdronk.

The 2018 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is youthfully wound with soft white peach scents and touches of hazelnuts, flowers and crushed shell. The palate is racy and mineral driven to begin, opening to a soft, generously perfumed finish. Give it another couple of years in bottle. 905 cases produced.

The 2018 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is a powerful, structured wine. Apricot, burnt sugar, crushed rocks, chamomile, spice, lemon confit and marzipan flesh out. Ample and expansive, the Rochioli is a Chardonnay of real character. In 2018, it is especially distinctive.

David Ramey is between releases for some of his bottlings, so I tasted fewer wines than I would have in most years. Ramey did send a few older vintages, which I have included in this report because the wines tend to age well. I especially admire the Chardonnays in this range, as they are so distinctive. Ramey is among the very few producers in California who favors longer aging of 20 months in barrel for his vineyard designates, an approach I personally think works very well with top sites. In recent years, Ramey has been joined by his children Claire and Alan, so the future looks pretty bright.
