Description
An Amontillado is a sherry that matures under flor such as a fino or Manzanilla. After the first biological
ripening, the flor disappears very gradually, allowing oxidative ripening to begin. An Amontillado is a complex wine due to this twofold aging and somewhat more subtle than an Oloroso.
The grapes for this Juan Piñero Amontillado all come from one vineyard of lbariza soil (limestone) in Sanlucar; so a single vineyard. The Juan Piñero Amontillado is 100% made from the Palomino Fino grape with 30 years aging in American oak barrels in a 3-vat criadera system, of which about 12 years under (partial) flor.
This Juan Piñero Amontillado is delicate and complex with nutty aromas in the nose such as hints of almond and
hazelnut, smoky with notes of the sea. On the palate this sherry is dry, nutty, roasted with smoky and salty notes with a long finish. This lovely Amontillado VORS is perfect with soups, stocks, white meat, fatty fish, wild mushrooms, asparagus, artichokes, semi-aged cheeses and perfect with the real Belotta Jamom . After opening, store in a dark and cool place for up to 2 weeks after opening.

The VORS range is certified over 30-years-old, starting with the NV Amontillado VORS, which averages almost 40 years. All the old wines had some wine from Macharnudo in Jerez where he had the oxidative wines, but during the last couple of years they have been refreshed with Manzanilla Maruja. The palate is sharp, with deep flavors, precise and vertical. Only 500 half-liter bottles are drawn twice per year.
I tasted a few wines from Juan Piñero last time, mostly the Manzanilla Maruja, and now I tasted a whole range that is currently not exported to the US. Juan Piñero bought an old 'bodega' from the early 20th century in Sanlúcar in 1995 and acquired the Maruja solera from Terry. He operated as an 'almacenista' and used to sell wines mainly to La Gitana, but has recently started bottling and selling his wines. They have aging facilities both in Sanlúcar for Manzanilla and Jerez for the Fino. They do not own vineyards, but purchase must from the Pago del Hornillo - a renowned vineyard in Sanlúcar. They stock 3,000 old Sherry casks ranging from 40 to 100 years of age and produce an average of 50,000 bottles per year. Prices are approximated based on retail prices in Spain.
