Description
Château la Négly is located in the Languedoc, on the banks of the Étang de Pissévache on the foothills of the La Clape Massif. Négly is owned by the Paux-Rosset family, and daughter Marion makes the wine, assisted by oenologist Claude Gros. The great diversity of soils, height difference and location (up to ten meters from the tide's edge!) ensures a great variety in style and strength, but there is one characteristic that unites all wines: great precision and a strong degree of minerality. The quality of Négly has not gone unnoticed by Parker: he has repeatedly given high ratings (up to 99 points) to various Négly wines!
The La Négly Brise Marine Blanc is a blend of Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Clairette from old vines (+50 years) which has matured for 3 months in partly wooden cuves and a (small) part in French oak barriques. In the glass the wine a rich, straw-yellow color. The expressive nose contains notes of exotic fruit, combined with almond. The attack is powerful, partly due to the wood tones, but is immediately followed by the fresh, mineral structure of the wine. A delicious, balanced, elegant wine from the grandcru region of the Langeudoc - La Clape
Jancis Robinson, July 2019 - 16.5/20 pts (2018)
Robert Parker, July 2019 - 92 pts (2018)

A 50-50 blend of Bourboulenc (from 50-year-old vines) and Roussanne, the 2018 La Clape La Brise Marine Blanc is a fine effort. Understated aromas of melon and lime give way to a vibrant, medium-bodied palate that's fresh and electric on the long finish, with bright acidity and briny notes coming together in a tongue-tingling finale.
This year's visit to Chateau de la Negly included a surprise look at some previous vintages, which cemented in my mind that these are some of the most compelling wines to come out of Languedoc. No, they're not wines for those who think size and richness are incompatible with elegance, as these inky behemoths actually—to this taster anyway—show a surprising level of nuance and finesse. They're big—mostly 15% alcohol or higher—but avoid tasting stewed or raisined. The ripe tannins allow them to drink well young, while the concentration enables them to drink well for up to two decades. Yes, the top cuvées are expensive, but put them in the context of other world-class wines, produced in quantities of only about 300 cases annually, and all of a sudden they don't seem so pricey.
