Description
Le Serre Nuove is the second wine of Tenuta Ornellaia. The winemakers decided to make this wine at the time that they were busy blending Ornellaia. They were busy making the choices of the barriques, which provide the characteristics of suppleness in the structure, the fruit and the characteristics of the terroir. The fruit that was discovered from the younger vines has laid the basis for this wine. An unprecedentedly beautiful wine that is significantly cheaper than the cult wine Ornellaia. In the glass, the Serre Nuove is rich, concentrated, ruby red. The aroma of this wine is roasted fruit, herbs and hints of mint. The taste is full, with the spicy impressions of the Merlot grapes, enriched with the fruity hints of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vineyards of Ornellaia are located near the famous wine region in Bolgheri, in the Maremma near the Tuscan coast. Each of these vineyards has its own terroir and therefore has its own specific characteristics to achieve optimum quality of the vines.
After the harvest, which is completely separated by grape variety and is done entirely by hand, the grapes are carefully selected for quality on large tables. The first fermentation takes place under a controlled temperature of 26-30ºC in steel tanks. The maturation process continues for 17 months in French oak barriques. The blend is made after the wine has matured for 12 months in the barriques (25% new barriques and 75% previously used barriques). After maturation in the barriques, the wine is bottled. The bottles then remain in the cellars of the domain for another 6 months to continue the maturation process as optimally as possible and to obtain the right quality. After this, the wine is matured enough to be introduced on the market. The wine is always released around September/October of the year
Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2022 is very elegant and fresh, the real characteristics that we are used to from this wine. In the glass, the wine is deep red with a purple hue. The aromas of ripe black fruit, spices and slightly toasted wood are delicious. The wine is generous and juicy and is followed by rich, firm tannins, while the finish is aromatic, soft and persistent. The wine already offers a delicious drinking experience and will reach a perfect maturity in ten years. 95/100 Suckling

The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a nicely extracted and rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage is very generous, even opulent, with dark fruit that is framed by exotic spice, baking chocolate and softly toasted tones from French oak. The wine ends on a creamy note with vanilla and cinnamon. The oak needs a few more years to integrate.
Following a very productive 17 years at Masseto and Ornellaia, Estate Director Axel Heinz announced in March of this year that he was leaving his position. He will join Château Lascombes in Bordeaux as CEO. Axel was born in Germany, raised in France and established a brilliant winemaking career in Italy. "It makes it difficult to know which national soccer team to root for," he once joked with me. Under his time at Masseto and Ornellaia, the two brands grew in respective strength with individual identities. His new releases command some of the highest prices in Italian wine and are sought after by collectors worldwide. Axel oversaw the construction of the new Masseto winery, and he launched a second wine called Massetino (new vintages of both are reviewed here). Axel was quoted in the Italian press as saying, "Italy will stay in my heart forever, but it's time to go back to France."

The brightness and purity of fruit is so beautiful here, showing flowers and currants. Very aromatic. Lots of finesse and focus on the medium-bodied palate with super-fine tannins and a lovely finish. Lively. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Why wait on this?

The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don't remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse.

There's quite a bit of news at Ornellaia and sister estate Masseto. Longtime Estate Manager Axel Heinz departed the wineries earlier this summer for his native Bordeaux, which opens a new chapter for both estates. “Two thousand-twenty was the last in a trio of vintages with more rain than usual and no drought, but quite a bit of heat during summer." Heinz explained. "Temperatures moderated in August, with the arrival of cool evenings. We picked quite a bit of Merlot early for the aromatics. Temperatures then rose markedly, leading to a week of rain, and then finally to good weather through to the end of harvest."
The 2020 wines strike me as quite aromatic in profile, with medium-bodied structures and a bit more restraint than is the norm. The 2021s, on the other hand, are more typical of Bolgheri. They possess notable textural resonance and volume, with fine-grained tannins and the exceptional balance of a great year.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
