Winemaker Ruud Maasdam works with the best possible block of Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough for this very special Staete Landt wine. A cool spring caused the fruit load per vine to be low. A great thing for a wine that is intended to come from high quality hand-picked fruit! Further towards the harvest it became warm and drier and provided beautiful full, well-set open Sauvignon Blanc bunches. The Sauvignon Blanc block selected for this Duchess is located in the Staete Landt Vineyard on the Golden Mile of the Rapaura Road sub-appellation in Marlbrough.

This new and unique Staete Landt Sauvignon Blanc with wild natural yeasts is a wonderfully rich and complex Sauvignon Blanc with layers of nutty, yeasty savory characters that contrast with red pepper and exotic fruits such as papaya, passion fruit. In the mouth the wine is full, well balanced with great complexity and great texture. This rich and voluptuous wine has attractive mineral characters and European-style elegance.

Staete Landt Vineyards

Dutchman Ruud Maasdam emigrated to New Zealand in 1996 to start his own wine estate. After extensive research, each plot was created with a specific wine style in mind. For years now, this has produced very individual, characteristic wines of an exceptionally high level of quality, which have certainly not gone unnoticed by the international wine press.

The Dutchman Ruud Maasdam emigrated to New Zealand in 1996 to start his own wine estate. After extensive research, each plot was laid out with a particular wine style in mind.

For years now, this has produced very individual, characteristic wines of an exceptionally high quality level that have certainly not escaped the international wine press. The American wine magazine Wine Spectator recently ranked its Sauvignon among New Zealand's top ten! Sauvignon is still best known here, but the planting of Pinot Noir is increasing strongly and grapes such as Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris are also doing remarkably well here. Staete Landt is a respected man in New Zealand with winemaker Ruud Maasdam.
