Description
This Morellino di Scansano from Poggio Maestrino is a wine with excellent complexity, structure and elegance. It has an intense, bright red color and a rich aroma of small red fruits and herbs. Lots of sweet cherry fruit and herbs like laurel on the nose. Very fruity and juicy on the palate with beautifully ripe and not too heavy tannins and beautiful acidity, which dominate in the long aftertaste. The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes selected from the best exposed areas where production quantities have been reduced to obtain the most perfect concentrations. The Morellino has enveloping, complex and persistent aromas that emphasize the ripe (Marasca) cherries and has a pleasant aftertaste with spicy and balsamic notes. The bottle aging gives it an exquisite elegance and soft taste.
Poggio Maestrino is located in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG appellation. The soil there is medium in texture and has a volcanic origin. The vines have an average age of about 10 years and the vineyard covers approximately 13.5 hectares and is located 150 m above sea level. The grapes were harvested in the second half of October followed by maceration at a temperature of approximately 28°C for 10/12 days. Malolactic fermentation in steel barrels, maturing for at least 1 year in tonneaux, then at least 6 months in steel and 1 year in the bottle. About 8,000 bottles of this wine are made per year.
Poggio Maestrino winery is part of Rocca di Castagnoli, owned by Calogero Calì. He has owned Rocca di Castagnoli since 1981 and has since acquired four other wine companies, including Poggio Maestrino. He employs an impressive team of winemakers and grape growers, led by Daniele Pagni, to get the wines from all companies the way he wants them. The end result is never a megalomaniac and expensive blockbuster but rather a digestible and elegant wine for a decent price.
