Description
About the Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo
Quintaluna is in fact a kind of 'second wine' of the famous house Ossian, located in southern Rueda. The name Quintaluna is an illusion to the fifth phase of the moon. After all, the domain works completely organically/bio. This means that you must take into account the phases of the moon. A rigorous selection in the more than 150 year old vineyards results in a small quantity of the exclusive wine Ossian , considered for several years as the best white from Spain. Javier Zaccagnini is the initiator of this mini-project, who is also director of the famous Aalto vineyard in Ribera del Duero.
Grapes and aging process of the Quintaluna Verdejo from Ossian
The Quintaluna grapes come from some very small sandy vineyards located in the north of Segovia. They are planted in sandy soil. Most of them are very old vines from the pre-phylloxera period, not grafted and preserved because the sandy soil prevented the plague . The vines are therefore more than 120 years old and some even more than 180 years. The hand-picked grapes are first stored in a cold room to preserve their aromatic qualities. After they have gone through a careful selection process, they were carefully destemmed and pressed. Fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. For 12 months the wine remained on its lees (sur lie) in oak barrels and stainless steel and then gets bottle maturation.
Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo Tasting Notes
Quintaluna expresses the freshness and authentic character of the Verdejo variety and is certainly not an average Verdejo, but is an authentic elegant complex wine. By deliberately low yields, Ossian wants to increase the concentration and the varietal typicality. The Quintaluna from Ossian does not innovate only its image, but is a new wine with a new philosophy and another leap in quality. The 'entry level wine' from Ossian is not just any wine, because at Ossian they are obliged to stand. The expertise speaks immediately. In the glass this pure 100% verdejo bright straw yellow, with beautiful tears. Beautiful ripe citrus fruits dominate the nose, with further green apple and gooseberry. The Quintaluna is very balanced with a good minerality and finesse. Unprecedented good price-quality ratio.

The 2020 Quintaluna is pure Verdejo from small plots on sandy soils in the province of Segovia, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. They still use grapes from external suppliers but are working toward using 100% their own grapes (which they might achieve in 2023); therefore, the wine is not certified organic, because some of the vineyards from the growers are not certified. It has a balsamic nose reminiscent of bay leaf, dried yellow flowers, chamomile and pollen intermixed with pit fruit. It has a dry palate and a chalky texture, with balance and finesse, with moderate ripeness and 13.5% alcohol. 110,000 bottles.
When the Ruiz family from Pago de Carraovejas in Ribera del Duero purchased Ossian in the Rueda zone in 2013, they had seven hectares of old vineyards. But they have kept purchasing vineyards in Nieva and now have 55 hectares of old vines in 10 different villages and produce some 200,000 bottles. They have been building a new winery that they hope to have ready for the 2023 harvest.

Creamy nose for a verdejo with sour cream, spices and ripe citrus that is almost slightly tropical. Pretty full-weighted on the palate with nice structure and length.

From: The Vast Bounty of Central Spain (Feb 2021)
Light, bright straw. Fresh pear, orange pith and a suggestion of pungent flowers on the powerfully scented nose, along with a building mineral nuance. Juicy and incisive in the mouth, offering Meyer lemon, pear and quince flavors accented by a spicy ginger flourish. Silky and focused on the finish, which shows powerful floral lift, minerally cut and impressive persistence.

Owned by the Ruiz family of Pago de Carraovejas fame, Ossian, a 90-hectare estate, is, to my mind, the leading producer of white wines in central Spain and produces some of the best whites in the country. Dissatisfied with the political machinations of the Rueda DO, Ossian is not a member of the association. That means that their wines, despite being made from some of the region’s oldest (up to 200 years old!), ungrafted and pre-phylloxera bush vines in the prime Nieva zone and with no compromise or expense spared on quality, bear the simple Castilla y Léon appellation. It’s worth noting that only ambient yeasts are used here, with no enzyme additions, which is way out of line with the normal, highly commercial practices of practically all of the bodegas in Rueda. As always, it’s what in the bottle that counts, and these are wines that transcend Rueda. All of them see much longer fermentations than is the norm for Rueda, in a variety of vessels, mostly French oak. The top bottlings here will age effortlessly and show the minerality and complexity of serious white Burgundy after a couple of years. Also worth noting is that, the wines are made with the consulting help of Rafael Palacios, who makes some of Galicia’s most highly regarded white wines at As Sortes, his bodega in Valdeorras.

Ossian is also jokingly referred to as the White Aalto because Ossian is the mini-project of Javier Zaccagnini, also partner and director of Aalto in Ribera Del Duero, and Ismael Gazalo, whose family has been making wine in the region for years. The extremely old Verdejo vineyards are located in the village of 'Nieva' and are 850 meters above sea level. The vines are between 100 and 160 years old making this the longest certified vineyard in Castilla y León. On Ossian not just any Rueda is made as you will find thirteen in a dozen. No, on the contrary, Javier hired a Burgundian topoenologist. Together they vinify the small yield unique Verdejo in a Burgundian way, just like Pierre does with Chardonnay in Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. In some years a top-top cuvée is made 'Ossian Capitel'. In a few years, Ossian has grown into Spain's most revered white wine.
In 2013, Ossian was bought by José MarÃa Ruiz (from the top house Pago de Carraovejas from the Ribera del Duero) and Zaccagnini left the company. Nevertheless, the young winery remains focused on the same high quality standards and there is even more innovation and Ossian is among the absolute top of the Verdejo wines from the Rueda.
