Description
Felton Road is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand, the southernmost wine growing region in the world. This region is synonymous with 'Winemaking on the edge'. The fact is that a cat and mouse game is regularly played with the frost. The fragmented vineyards nestle in small microclimates on slopes surrounded and protected by high mountains, many of which remain snow-capped all year round. Since the estate was founded in 1991, the Felton Road wines have been an overwhelming success. The cellar door at the friendly little estate is closed for more than half the year because it is 'sold out'. Together with Ata Rangi from Martinborough, Felton Road was awarded 'grand cru' status at the Pinot Noir Conference in Wellington in January 2010. What is special is that the title 'grand cru' was chosen by wine professionals. Great class, wines with great refinement and the ultimate style of great Burgundy. Nigel Greening of Felton Road is a passionate winemaker with a clear philosophy: 'A winemaker has a thousand ways to make a wine 'better'.' But better than who or what? 'It has taken us more than a decade to gradually harmonize grape, terroir and our winemaking methods.' The Pinot Noir of Felton Road symbolizes the finest and purest that New Zealand has to offer. Complex, graceful layering, completely biodynamic. Scarce and limited availability!
The Cornish vineyard was planted in 2000 so it is now starting to produce beautiful fruit. The Pinot Noir grape bunches are hand-picked with great selection at optimum ripeness. In the vinification cellar, 75% of the grapes are destemmed and crushed, after which they, together with the other bunches, first undergo a cold maceration of 5 days to obtain more colour and aroma extraction. This is followed by a 2-week spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with wild (grape-specific) yeasts in stainless steel tanks. This is followed by pressing of the grape must and transferring the young wine to French oak barriques (30% new) to undergo malolactic fermentation and to mature. After 13 months, the wine is bottled without clarification or filtering. This entire process takes place according to strict biodynamic rules and regulations.
In the glass, the Felton Road Cornish Point has a bright ruby red color. In the nose, rushing aromas of black cherries, strawberries, lavender, tar and autumnal forest. In the taste palette, tones of ripe red and black berries, dark chocolate, dried Provencal herbs, a touch of nutmeg and vanilla, which are accompanied by a long finish with clear tannins and lively acids. 96/100 Suckling.

The 2022 Cornish Point Pinot Noir is incredibly fragrant, with dried lavender and sandalwood, cherry, raspberry pip and cocoa. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied and supple, with layers of tannin and spice. Through the finish, the wine tightens up and flows across the palate for a precise, spooling close. Exciting wine, I like the undulation of texture in the mouth. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

From: New Zealand’s Latest Red Releases: Growing Up (May 2024)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Cornish Point is an elegant, stylish wine with precision and poise. It tickles the nose with its fragrance, almost dancing up your nostrils, bringing woody green herbs to your olfactory. Christmas spices and fruit cake aromas appear alongside fresh cherries and plums. It is shy of medium-bodied and isn't showy, offering a more delicate, light-on-its-feet style than other Pinot Noirs from the Felton Road stable. The wine ends with a gentle lift, reminiscent of a conductor lifting his baton and instructing the orchestra to end the quiet final note. The finish is fragrant and pure fruited.
- By Rebecca Gibb MW on May 2024
New Zealand Pinot Noir producer Felton Road is an organic and biodynamic estate that has evolved in the past two decades, moving toward more precision and freshness. There are five different Pinot Noirs, beginning with the not-so-entry-level “Bannockburn” cuvée. Hailing from the original site – the Elms Vineyard – come Block 3 and Block 5. The latter offers a more broody, dense expression with more classical structure and detail than Block 3. Several kilometers down the road, the Calvert Vineyard produces refined yet firm Pinot Noir. Cornish Point often plays second or even third fiddle but is a fragrant, elegant wine.
In 2022, Central Otago escaped the worst of the wet weather that faced the majority of the country’s wine regions. There were no major weather challenges during the season, and the wines reflect calm and essence. They might not be big in volume, but they have style and quietness, while not lacking intensity or detail.
In the vineyard, there are exciting developments, including regenerative farming. Felton Road have abandoned tillage to prevent carbon loss while plowing and installed underground irrigation so it lies below the cover crop. Drones have replaced tractors, which spray sulfur on the rows for mildew protection. They are quick, have no ground impact issues and don’t damage cover crops. They have also implemented new technology that enables us to map the spread of spores in the vineyard using PCR DNA technology so that mildew can be detected before it becomes a problem, allowing the drones to spray proactively rather than reactively.

The fact is that a cat and mouse game is regularly played with the frost. The fragmented vineyards nestle in small micro-climates on slopes surrounded by high mountains, many of which remain covered with snow peaks all year round.
Although Otago is located at 45 ° south latitude and winemaking can be considered risky here, warm days, cool nights and a long dry autumn in this micro climate combine perfectly for fine Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The climate is also described as continental. This offers the advantage of little rain and many hours of sun. Felton Road's owner Nigel Greening and super winemaker Blair Walter are obsessed with the different vineyards with various terroirs. Special attention is also given to the different Pinot Noir cloons. Since the domain started in 1991, Felton Road wines have been an overwhelming success. The cello door on the sympathetic small domain is closed for more than half of the year due to 'sold out'. Together with Ata Rangi from Martinborough, Felton Road was awarded 'grand cru' status at the Pinot Noir Conference in Wellington in January 2010. What is special is that the title 'grand cru' was chosen by wine professionals. Great class, wines with a lot of sophistication!
After thorough soil and climate research in 1991, the British owner Nigel Greening selected three different soils, the Elms Vineyard with a total of 14 hectares, on the north-facing slopes (southern end of Felton Road in Bannockburn on poor soil). hemisphere!) for planting top vineyards with 55% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 15% riesling. Because slopes were chosen, there is little trouble with night frost. The whole is strongly reminiscent of the Burgundian Côte d'Or. A subdivision into 13 different blocks was made and it was determined as precisely as possible where the different grape varieties - and which clones - were to come. Pinot noir on the heavier soils with more clay and loess (block 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13), chardonnay (block 2, 6, 8 and 9) and riesling (block 1, 2 and 4) on the lighter soils with more slate and gravel. 9 blocks were planted from 1992 to 1994, with a planting density of 2667 canes / ha. In 2001, blocks 10 through 12 were planted with the latest Dijon clones of the pinot noir, (113, 114, 115, 667 and 777) on low vines. Here they opted for a planting density of 4000 sticks / ha, so that more concentration of the wines was achieved. The small block 13 (0.6 ha) was planted in 2002 as a test with a planting density of 6667 vines / ha, such as in Burgundy. Felton Road is a wine producer from the New Wine World that should definitely be followed as one of the best candidates for excellent chardonnay and pinot noir.
