About the Envinate winery
Envínate (translated as "wine yourself") is the spirit child of 4 friends, winemakers Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos and José Martínez. This group of 4 was formed in 2005 during their oenology training at the Miguel Hernandez University in Alicante. After graduating, they founded a wine consultancy, which evolved into Envínate, a project focused on exploring unique plots, mainly in the Atlantic Ocean-influenced regions of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. Their shared goal is to create deeply pure and authentic wines that express the terroir of each parcel in a clear and concise manner. To achieve this, no chemicals are used in Envínate's vineyards, all plots are harvested by hand, the grapes are trampled and the wines are fermented exclusively with wild yeasts, with a varying proportion of whole bunches of grapes. For maturation, the wines are aged in old barrels and concrete barrels, and sulfur is added only at bottling, if necessary. The results are some of the most exciting and honest wines produced in Spain today.
Grapes and tasting notes of the Envinate Lousas Vinas de Aldea
Aldea means "village" in Gallego; therefore, this is Envínate's "village wine", produced from a combination of at least 60 year old plots located in the ancient wine region of Ribeira Sacra. The native vines grow on steep slate slopes and are located between 400-600 meters altitude.
The Lousas Viñas de Aldea 2021 is a regional red wine from Ribeira Sacra, but is sold without a designation of origin. This wine is a blend of 80% Mencia, 4% Alicante Bouchet, 4% Brancellao (Albarello), 4% Godello, 2% Caiño, 2% Merenzao (Bastardo), 2% Mouraton, 1% Palomino, 1% Souson. The grapes were picked between September 12 and 28 and vinified in concrete and small plastic containers with 70% to 100% full bunches, depending on the plot, and aged in well-seasoned oak barrels of various ages with lees for 11 months without added sulfur.
It is a true Atlantic vintage: vertical and fine-grained, structured and with finesse, balance and freshness. The Aldea is a lively wine with notes of pepper, blackberry fruit and minerality. Chalky and broad on the palate, but truly weightless with chalky tannins and a fresh, refined finish.

The sample of the 2022 Lousas Viñas de Aldea was in stainless steel, blended and sulfured and waiting to be bottled in a couple of months. Most 2022s are more immediate than the 2021s, and this is floral, perfumed and expressive, with a juicy and round palate. They now have more vineyards in general, so they compensated the lower yields with more land under vine. The 2022s have turned out fresher and cooler than what the conditions of the year pointed out. There will be some 25,000 bottles of this. Even though it's a lower-yielding year, they had more vineyards.
The wines from Envínate, one of the most dynamic projects in Spain, are increasingly sought after in international markets. So, from now on, I will start tasting the wines every 12 months, giving a preview of the unbottled wines from the last harvest and the bottled ones in the market. From Ribeira Sacra, it's the bottled 2021s and the 2022s in barrel, two very different harvests. There are two new village wines from 2021, a vintage with good yields again. 2021 is a cool, classical vintage that shows quite transparently the character of the places, while the 2022s are a little rounder and more immediate, even if they ended up being much fresher than initially expected. 2020 was an earlier harvest (2017 was the earliest ever). In 2022, they started early, and in 2023 they started early too but then it was a long harvest because they had to stop because of the rain.

Excellent depth with a vibrant lift of pepperiness to the wild and airy bramble fruit and minerality. Chalky and broad on the palate but really weightless with chalky tannins and a fresh, refined finish. Delicious now.
