Description
Bodegas Shaya was founded by Juan Gil. The Shaya Verdejo is a white wine from the DO Rueda made from 100% Verdejo from old vines with very minimal yields, planted in the southeastern part of the province of Segovia - in the south of the Rueda appellation. The poor sandy soils force the roots of the old vines to search for water several meters deep. As a result, the minerality is extra thickened. The wine is made by Australian winemaker Belinda Thomson, of the Crawford River winery. The wine is partly raised in stainless steel and partly fermented in oak barrels and remains in contact with the lees for several months before being bottled.
The color is light yellow in the glass with beautiful youthful green reflections. Due to the partial aging in contact with its own lees and with the wood, the wine has a lot of fruit concentration and complexity (which is unusual for a wine in this price range). The wine has beautiful aromas in which nuts, white fruit and exotic fruit such as pineapple and green apples. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and the Shaya offers a fresh, elegant and inviting wine with excellent acidity with clearly defined flavours.

SHAYA VERDEJO RUEDA SHAYA 2022
Score

Subtle cumin spices to the melons and stone fruit. Supple and medium-bodied on the palate with fresh, medium acidity. Medium length in the finish with subtle flavors. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

From: The Whites of Rueda Get Serious (Feb 2024)
The 2022 Verdejo Shaya Organic originates from Rueda, with 30% fermented and aged for up to four months in French oak barrels. Displaying a yellow hue with a greenish sheen, its aromatic profile features notes of vanilla and white flowers, complemented by a subtle hint of fennel. Ample, creamy and refreshing on the palate, it lingers with concentrated fruit flavors and a well-managed barrel influence.

Established in Segovia by the Gil Family Estate Wines, with operations in Spain's major terroirs—from Rioja to Jumilla and Priorat to Zamora—Shaya is the Rueda winery focused on crafting Verdejo. They bottle simple wines, like Vidilla, lees-aged wines, like the Organic, and a Gran Vino de Rueda under the name Habis. These are all made with regional grapes in a frank and ample style.
