Description
"Fantastic, incredible, the best Godello ever made, unprecedented quality" - just a few keywords you will encounter when you read the reviews about this wine.
This prestigious Pedrouzos comes from a legendary vineyard! The oldest Godello vineyard in existence and one of the oldest single vineyards in the world. Planted in 1885 at an altitude of about 500 meters by great-grandfather José Ramón Gayoso. In this vineyard there are still approx. 170 years old vines. The vineyard is only 0.15ha in size at an altitude of 500 meters with a slope of 20%. Due to its age, the yield is very low and the quality is unprecedented. This extraordinary jewel of a wine has further increased the reputation of the already great winery Valdesil to unprecedented heights. Only a maximum of 300 magnums are bottled from each vintage of this wine, so when you get your hands on one of these bottles, you really have a very special item in your hands.
This truly excellent white wine shows beautiful subtle notes of melon, pear and sweet fruit on the nose. Drinking this wine is an experience in itself! The taste is very intense, like a true explosion in the mouth, with fine (oak) wood notes and a hint of ginger. Complex, very well balanced, minerally with excellent acidity. The wine has a nice long, dry and silky finish.
This Pedrouzos is excellent company for a good dinner. Combines very well with fish dishes such as baked white fish, bouillabaisse, cod, grilled fish, oysters, fish soup, rice dishes and fish stews.
FACT: In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this fine wine. We will automatically send it to you when you order this wine. The 2011 Valdesil Pedrouzos Godello is from a legendary south-facing vineyard planted in 1885 at 500 meters altitude, the oldest Godello vineyard in existence. They only use wild yeast, ferment it in 500-liter barrels without going through malolactic fermentation, and aged six months in barrel and six months in bottle. Subtle notes of melon, quite a shy nose. The palate is very intense, with striking acidity. It’s here where the old-vine intensity is noticed, as the nose is quite shy and it needs time and air. This wine is only offered in magnum. The wood is much better integrated than in the Pezas da Portela. Drink 2014-2020.
Valdesil was created in 1990 by the Prada Gayoso family. They had been grape-growers in the region for a very long time but over the years the ownership of the vineyards was divided among different family members, and even some plots were sold. They started making wine and set themselves the objective of recovering ownership of the family vineyards. They had kept the Pedrouzos vineyard, which was planted by their ancestor Jose Ramon Gayoso just after the attack of phyloxera in 1885 that remains the oldest known Godello vineyard. They re-purchased the small parcels of vineyards, locally called pezas, and they used the Pedrouzos canes to replant them when needed. The first commercial release of their Pezas da Portela was from the 2002 vintage, when they finished the acquisitions of all these pezas. They now own 20 hectares of vineyards and buy some grapes to produce 250,000 bottles of wine per year. 2013 has been a dreadful year for Valdeorras, with one terrible frost and two hailstorms that destroyed a good part of the fruit, and will probably have a negative effect on the yields of the 2014 harvest. When I visited the Pedrouzos vineyard, which is amazing, it had no grapes whatsoever; they were so damaged that they decided to green harvest all the grapes to protect the plants. At such a venerable old age they don’t need the stress of ripening the fruit that was damaged anyway. They produce four whites and two reds in a functional and simple winery, as their efforts go into their vineyards. A very reliable source for quality wines from Valdeorras.

(from a 0.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1885, of which around a hundred original vines still remain): Pale gold. Ripe peach and poached pear on the nose, with complicating notes of iodine, honey and musky flowers. Round, chewy and expansive, offering intense pit fruit flavors and bracing notes of lemon zest and smoky minerals. Nicely balances richness and vivacity and finishes with outstanding clarity and mineral-driven persistence.

Gold was once mined in the Galician region of Valdeorras, the 'golden' valley, but today it is wine. In particular white wine from a special grape, godello and red wine from the grape Mencia. The variety grows on slopes and on plateaus around the river Sil and has been successfully transformed into fine wines. The Valdesil family domain is one of the most prominent houses that sources its grapes from all kinds of small plots, partly granite-containing, partly sandy, partly with slate. The sticks are often very old (top). Val De Sil has made the Godello and Mencia wines from the Valley de Sil famous.
Bodegas Valdesil is located in Vilamartín de Valdeorras in the deep west of Spain, approximately 180 km southeast of Santiago de Compostela. The history of the winery begins in the year 1885, when the winegrower José Ramón Gayoso began planting godello grape vines on the slate slopes of the Sil valley. Everyone made fun of him at the time. Although Gayoso later gave up the vineyard, the plants survived, and today the same genetic material is still used here. The modern history of the winery starts in 1991. In that year the Prada-Gayoso family brings the vineyards back in top condition. Today the winery covers 20 ha. Of these, many are small plots of old godello plants. Some vineyards are located at the best spots of Valdeorras, especially on the sunny slopes at Córgomo and Portel. The red grape variety mencía is also grown here. A total of six wines are made from both grape varieties. Bodegas Valdesil is one of the most reliable producers in Galicia, "a very reliable source for quality wines from Valdeorras", says Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
