Description
Ornellaia Bolgheri doc Superiore 2021 – LA GENEROSITÀ – is the 36th vintage of Ornellaia. Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista honors the unique character of each new vintage of Ornellaia. Every year since May 2009, the release of Ornellaia 2006, a modern artist creates a work of art and a series of limited edition labels, inspired by the word chosen by the winemaker to describe the character of the new vintage. For this 16th edition of Vendemmia d'Artista, the Italian visual artist Marinella Senatore has been asked to interpret the theme of the 2021 year, La Generosità. With 'La Generosità', Ornellaia emphasizes the relationship between the land, with its different species and ecosystems, and the energy of the people involved in the creation of Ornellaia 2021. Each case (6x750ml) of Ornellaia 2021 contains one bottle of the special label and 5 bottles with the regular label.
The Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot / The Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore Rosso Ornellaia 2021 depicts the characteristics of a typical vintage in Bolgheri, with lots of sunny and dry periods, the basis for a rich and concentrated wine, deeply expressive and generous. In the characteristic bouquet we find notes of Mediterranean shrubs, herbs, cypress berries, classic blackberries and dark fruit notes. These aromas accompany a taste full of dense tannins, without lacking precision and finesse. The aftertaste is lively and gives a feeling of aromatic freshness and elegance.

ABOUT VINTAGE 2021
2021 started mildly with a rainy winter, which allowed water supplies in the soil to be replenished. After a dry March, the buds started to emerge in the first two weeks of April. Thanks to the gradual increase in temperatures and normal amounts of rain, the shoots developed evenly, followed
due to flowering in excellent conditions towards the end of May. Summer fully arrived in June, with temperatures slightly above average and virtually no rain. The véraison (the coloring of the grapes from green to blue) took place in the last week of July. The drought persisted in August and September, but due to the rain in the spring and thanks to the deep soils of the estate, the vines did not experience excessive water stress. Beautiful conditions for small, highly concentrated grapes with exceptional potential in terms of quality. September was hot and sunny, devoid of rainfall, perfect for an “à la carte” harvest, achieving the maximum quality potential of each vineyard. The blue grapes were mainly harvested in September. We started with Merlot in the first two weeks and followed with the other varieties of the estate between September 13 and October 1.
The hand-picked clusters are collected in 15 kg crates, then manually sorted on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally gently crushed. Since 2016, an optical selection has been introduced, in addition to the manual selection, to further increase the quality of the selection.
Each grape variety and each unique block of the vineyards is vinified separately. The fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at a temperature between 26 and 30°C for one week, followed by maceration for approximately 15 days, a total of three weeks. Mainly oak barrels were used for the malolactic fermentation, 70% of them new and 30% used once before. The wine has matured for 18 months in the barriques, in the cellars of Ornellaia. After the first 12 months of maturation, the wine is assembled, after which the wine rests in the barriques for another 6 months. After bottling, this wine matured for another 12 months before being released.
CHECK FOR AUTHENTICITY
In recent years there has been a lot of fake on the market of established top houses from France, Italy and Spain, among others. Grandcruwijnen only purchases from wineries or official importers. Be very wary of offers "too good to be true". You run the risk of having a fake bottle with a completely different content. Even though this is a real bottle, you never know what journey a bottle has gone through. Wines can sometimes be in motion for a year and finally arrive at you from a warm truck, sea container and non-air-conditioned wineries. Since 2001, every bottle of Ornellaia, regardless of size, has the brand name ORNELLAIA embossed on the bottom of the bottle. From the year 2011, an authentication seal is applied to all bottles of Ornellaia before shipment from the estate. This seal contains information relating to the specific bottle in question, which is registered in a database accessible to consumers.

The Ornellaia 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia offers an extra layer of richness, generosity and plushness that shapes a very open-knit and exuberant Tuscan red. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. You feel the fruit and oak weight of the wine, the extract and the 15% alcohol content. All of these elements come together to big effect. From that power, you get black cherry, dark fruit, sweet spice and barbecue smoke. The fruit tannins are young, and this edition of Ornellaia proves worthy for medium or long-term drinking, especially as it softens up with more bottle age.
Here's a bit of news I am especially happy to report: between the sister estates Ornellaia and Masseto, bottle weight has been reduced by 82 tons in two years. The goal is to reduce an additional 12 tons before next year. For example, the bottle for the 2021 Masseto reviewed here was reduced by 150 grams to its current weight of 600 grams. This is a theme I have been following carefully (https://www.robertparker.com/wines/u8L84HES4Nid48LDw), because if a brand as important as Masseto takes a leadership stand on environmentally unfriendly glass bottles, other estates will surely follow.
This is a time of enormous change for Ornellaia and Masseto. Estate Director Axel Heinz left his position in March 2023 after nearly two decades in Bolgheri. The German-born, Bordeaux-trained winemaker is currently employed at Château Lascombes in Margaux. Axel joined the Tuscan estate in 2005 and oversaw the development of Ornellaia and Masseto as distinct brands, each with their own dedicated winery today. Lamberto Frescobaldi is president of the group today. Former Ornellaia CEO Giovanni Geddes, the visionary who brought Masseto to La Place de Bordeaux, announced his retirement in 2023.
Starting January 1, 2024, a new team was put into place. Marco Balsimelli is charged with production (returning home to Italy from Bordeaux, where he spent 17 years with Laboratoire Oenologique Boissenot) and Giuliano Tarchi is vineyard manager (for both Ornellaia and Masseto). Gaia Cinnirella is winemaker for Masseto, and the Ornellaia winemaker is Denise Cosentino (she replaces outgoing Olga Fusari).
The Ornellaia Bianco became a Bolgheri Bianco DOC wine starting in the 2021 vintage. I have previously reviewed that vintage, and you will find my note published in our database.

Aromas of blackcurrants, iodine, crushed stone, hints of mint and sage. Blue fruits. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that open with air. It’s racy and very long. Very tannin driven and energetic with power and focus. Muscular and very toned. This is the best Ornellaia for the cellar in years. Try after 2030.

From: 2024 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2024)
The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That's not at all the case with the 2021. The blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot works so well. New oak was 70%.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2024
The 2021 Ornellaia is every bit as impressive as the components were when I tasted them during a visit to the property in September 2022. Harvest started early, in the last days of August, and then continued for several weeks. It’s a vintage with very high extract, more than even years like 2006, and yet the wine feels incredibly finessed, the result of gentler extraction overall and a lighter hand with oak. The last few years have seen a clear move towards complementing and balancing the natural opulence of Bolgheri rather than emphasizing it – as was sometimes the case in the past – and it shows. The Bianco, 100% Sauvignon Blanc, is also terrific.
In other news, Ornellaia has a new team headed by Technical Director Marco Balsimelli and Winemaker Denise Cosentino, both of whom joined following the departure of longtime Estate Director Axel Heinz and Winemaker Olga Fusari. Balsimelli worked alongside highly respected Bordeaux consultant Eric Boissenot for more than a decade, while Cosentino was most recently Winemaker at Domaines Barons de Rothchild’s Long Dai winery in Shandong, China. Balsimelli and Cosentino have stellar educational pedigrees and resumes. It will be interesting to see what the next chapter brings.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
Ornellaia Bolgheri doc Superiore 2021 – LA GENEROSITÀ – is the 36th vintage of Ornellaia. Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista honors the unique character of each new vintage of Ornellaia.
