Description
The Pago de Carraovejas is an almost Bordeaux-like wine and is incomparable with other Ribera del Dueros. The 2021 vintage is a blend of the three varieties present on the estate: 92% tempranillo, 5% cabernet sauvignon and 3% merlot. The wine is very complex and beautifully proportioned. Nothing dominates and various layers are released over time when smelling and tasting. Cedar, Asian herbs, violets, tapenade, and blackberry aromas in the nose. Fruit on the palate with soft wood tannins with a small vanilla note from growing up in American oak. The taste is medium to full-bodied and very balanced with fine, tight tannins and a silky texture. In terms of style, this wine can be compared to an Aalto from its good years and that is not surprising as the former winemaker and director Javier Zaccagnini of Aalto has worked closely with Pago de Carraovejas and Javier Zaccagnini is also the owner of Ossian which is currently now also falls under Pago de Carraovejas group. In addition to Pago de Carraovejas, the current Alma Carraovejas group also has Ossian, Vina Mein and Emilio Rojo in its portfolio.
Pago de Carraovejas is the truest reflection of the valley from which it takes its name. The Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines are spread over several slopes of the Carraovejas Valley located in a wilderness at an altitude of over 900 meters. The vineyards are planted on tertiary soil. On the surface, loamy limestones emerge, with the presence of clay, sandstone and gypsum with the characteristic white hue. It is an austere soil that subjects the vines to an attempt to control the yield and give the best of themselves. These are soils that force the vines to regulate themselves and do their best. The vineyards are distributed from the middle zones up to more than 900 meters; from the gentle undulation that descends to the stream, to plots with a gradient of more than 30%. South and north facing slopes, each with their own personality, outline the profile of the Carraovejas Valley. The grapes for Pago de Carraovejas were harvested by hand after an initial selection of bunches in the vineyard. A double selection was then made in the winery: first on bunch and then on berry. Gravity must allow maximum respect for the raw material during production. During the fermentation process, indigenous yeasts and milk bacteria from our own estate were used. The wine matured for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.
Fact: In addition to Ossian, the Pago Carraojevas group has also included the beautiful winery Viña Mein in Galicia. Great wines made with a sea injection. At the end of 2020 , Milsetentayseis La Peña (wines from very old Pre-Phylloxera vines) and the iconic wines (always between 95-100 parking points) from Emilio Rojo were added to the group (Alma Carraovejas). The latest acquisition will be in mid-2021, which now belongs to the Bodega Marañones group from the Sierra de Gredos. In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will send it to you automatically when you order this wine. The wine is stored in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. You will immediately see the possible discount if you choose Pickup in the Checkout page. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for address.
ABOUT VINTAGE 2021 RIBERA DEL DUERO
The 2021 vintage featured a winter with high rainfall, which promoted a homogeneous vegetative cycle in the vineyard, while spontaneous and sown cover crops helped control the vigor of the vines. By the end of April there was widespread budbreak without any climatic incidents. The vines did not experience any hindrance in the development and evolution of the buds, resulting in very good yields that were balanced thanks to the thinning technique. The harvest took longer than normal due to occasional periods of rain; it started on September 22 and ended on October 14.

The eponymous 2021 Pago de Carraovejas comes from a cooler year when they consider the grapes had exceptional quality. The bottled wine is composed of Tinto Fino with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot with 15% alcohol but good freshness and integration of the oak after spending 12 months in 226- and 600-liter barrels. It's medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins, a juicy mouthfeel and a tasty finish. This is a more elegant Carraovejas. It was bottled in the spring of 2023.
The Ruiz Aragoneses family continues to expand their business and recently bought Tricó in RÃas Baixas. At Pago de Carraovejas, the original winery in Ribera del Duero, they produce 724,000 bottles, and they are a commercial success in Spain. The wines I tasted showed more freshness and better integration of the oak within their style.

Vibrant plums, cherries, cocoa powder and stones on the nose. Quite fresh on the medium- to full-bodied palate with sleek tannins that are evenly spread. Linear and polished. Very well crafted. Drink now or hold.

From: Ribera del Duero: A Shifting Frontier for Spanish Wine (Nov 2023)
The 2020 Pago de Carraovejas is a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot from Querada del Botija in Peñafiel, Ribera del Duero. Aged for 12 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels, it's garnet-red with a purple sheen. The aromas begin with enticing notes of strawberry, blackcurrant, sour cherry, spice and finely tuned oaky layers. On the palate, it's dry and juicy, with finely-grained tannins and a chalky texture invigorated by well-balanced acidity. Compared with previous house vintages, this is a precise new style for Ribera del Duero.

Sommelier and owner of the José MarÃa restaurant in Segovia since 1982, José MarÃa Ruiz decided to create a wine for his restaurant. In 1987, Ruiz began the Pago de Carraovejas project in Peñafiel, Ribera del Duero, which evolved into one of the region's most dynamic wineries. His son, Pedro, now leads the winery, expanding the business to include Alma Carraovejas with wineries in Nieva (Ossian), Galicia (Mein & Emilio Rojo) and Gredos (Marañones). Pago de Carraovejas boasts a restaurant and offers tourists a range of other amenities. Aludena Calvo oversees winemaking and has implemented a rejuvenated approach, blending Bordeaux varieties with Tempranillo. Pago de Carraovejas has transitioned from the ripe, structured profile of the past to a balanced, fruit-forward red by the 2020 vintage, a transformation less apparent in their parcel wines such as Anejón and Cuesta Las Liebres.

Pago de Carraovejas originally started with the first nine hectares and this has already become a reference winery in the heart of the Ribera del Duero. It all started more than three decades ago, when Pago de Carraovejas was founded in response to a dream of José MarÃa Ruiz to create a great wine in one of the areas that had the greatest potential at the time.
José MarÃa's history in the wine world had already begun several years earlier, in 1971, when he appeared as a representative of Spain at the 'First Global Contest for Sommeliers' in Milan. That experience was the beginning of his desire to open his own restaurant and make his own wines. Although he was still fully involved in the catering world since the opening of the renowned Restaurante José MarÃa in Segovia in 1982, he remained determined to launch his project for a small wine cellar that would produce wines of the best quality for his restaurant.
This is how the history of Pago de Carraovejas began when he opened the wine cellar in Peñafiel in 1987, specifically in the hills of Carraovejas. The location of these first nine hectares was chosen because they were an important historical center for Ribera del Duero wines and in one of the areas with the greatest potential for Spanish wines due to their location, soil and climate. This was the start of a project that has already produced more than thirty volumes.
The scope of what started as an ambitious dream has expanded tremendously over the years since the company was founded. In 2007, a new era began when José MarÃa's son Pedro Ruiz joined the project. This new leadership brought with it a fresh business perspective that, faced with the exponential growth of Pago de Carraovejas, decided to take on new challenges in sustainability and use them as criteria that would determine the company's activities; innovation as a driving force for progress and development; and enotourism as a means to open the project to all their customers with transparency and integrity.

Pedro Ruiz's leadership also marked the beginning of a new era under the concept of Alma Carraovejas (Soul of Carraovejas) that entails the search for unique landscapes that will help fulfill the dream of restoring and caring for unique legacies on the field of wine. -creating for future generations. The Alam Carraovejas group has a number of very famous wineries under its wing and only the best is good enough. Ossian, Maranones, Emilio Rojo, Vina Mein are wine houses belonging to the group. Top international houses. Visiting the winery is an absolute experience with the impressive wine cellar but also the Michelin-star restaurant AMBIVIUM which is in the top of the best Restaurants in Spain.

Pago de Carraovejas has unique wines, each with its own unique, extremely fascinating personality. The wines have very expressive aromas, intense color, fleshy, powerful and exuberant taste that manifests each of the characteristics of each variety. In recent years, this bodega has made a huge boost and is now one of the top houses in the Ribera del Duero.

Nice to know, but Jose Maria Ruiz serves the house wine in his restaurant in Segovia under the name "Autor" and this is a special version of the Pago de Carraovejas wines and it is only available in his restaurant. The restaurante José Maria is located on the Plaza Mayor in the city of Segovia in Spain and is managed on a daily basis by RocÃo Ruiz, Pedro's sister.
