Description
The grapes are picked by hand and that is no easy feat because this is a very old vineyard (100-160 years) with vines that require kneeling down. The wine is cooled after picking and ferments with its own native yeasts. After fermentation, the wine matures in barriques and foudres for 9-12 months and then the Ossian is bottle-aged for a year before it becomes available gradually. The Ossian is an expressive Verdejo wine and unique in its kind. White fruit with tropical notes, minerals, a touch of "roasted tones" and a great aftertaste. Highly stylized, complex nose with wild mushrooms, truffle, biscuit and roasted almonds. Received 94 Penin points and 93 points from James Suckling. The Ossian is a real Top Verdejo! and Ecological/organic - so tasty but supply is so limited!! This is a 1.5 liter magnum.
FACT: The single vineyards for the Ossian are not affected by grape aphid (pre-Phylloxera) and are therefore so old. This is because the louse moves via a tunnel system in the soil. The soil of the Ossian and Ossian Capitel are so extremely sandy that the louse is unable to dig a tunnel (which then collapses) and that is why these vineyards are so extremely old and still completely authentic. Vegan certified

Winery Ossian
Ossian was founded by Javier Zaccagnini, also partner and director of Aalto in Ribera Del Duero, and Ismael Gazalo, whose family has been making wine in the region for years. The famous winery Pago de Carraovejas now owns Ossian and they have continued the trend in making absolute top quality wines. The extremely old Verdejo vineyards are located in the village of 'Nieva' and are 850 meters above sea level. The vines are between 100 and 160 years old, making this the longest certified organic vineyard in Castilla y León. The vineyards are located on sandy soils, so the Ossian is still made from the original ungrafted authentic grape vines (i.e. pre-Phylloxera). Not just any Rueda is made at Ossian, as you will find a dime a dozen. No, on the contrary, Javier hired a top enologist from Burgundy. Together they vinify the small yield of unique Verdejo in a Burgundian way, just as Pierre does with Chardonnay in Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. In some years a top-top cuvée 'Ossian Capitel' is made. In just a few years, Ossian has become Spain's most respected white wine and is also highly sought after and appreciated internationally.

The eponymous 2020 Ossian was produced with Verdejo grapes from old, organically farmed vines around the village of Nieva (Segovia), a zone where phylloxera didn't reach. They consider 2020 their finest vintage to date, with a big change from 2018 and when they have achieved a much better understanding of their vineyards. It has notes of pit fruit and sweet spices, with good weight on the palate, moderate alcohol (13.5%) and ripeness and good freshness and balance. It's serious and with potential to develop in bottle. 80,000 bottles produced.
When the Ruiz family from Pago de Carraovejas in Ribera del Duero purchased Ossian in the Rueda zone in 2013, they had seven hectares of old vineyards. But they have kept purchasing vineyards in Nieva and now have 55 hectares of old vines in 10 different villages and produce some 200,000 bottles. They have been building a new winery that they hope to have ready for the 2023 harvest.

From: The Vast Bounty of Central Spain (Feb 2021)
Pale yellow-gold. Fresh peach, orange pith, pear and a suggestion of fennel on the powerfully scented nose, along with a hint of jasmine. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, offering vibrant Meyer lemon, pear nectar and honeysuckle flavors that are accented by a dusty mineral nuance. Silky and sharply focused on the finish, which shows strong, nervy lift, firm mineral cut and impressive persistence.
- By Josh Raynolds on February 2021
Owned by the Ruiz family of Pago de Carraovejas fame, Ossian, a 90-hectare estate, is, to my mind, the leading producer of white wines in central Spain and produces some of the best whites in the country. Dissatisfied with the political machinations of the Rueda DO, Ossian is not a member of the association. That means that their wines, despite being made from some of the region’s oldest (up to 200 years old!), ungrafted and pre-phylloxera bush vines in the prime Nieva zone and with no compromise or expense spared on quality, bear the simple Castilla y Léon appellation. It’s worth noting that only ambient yeasts are used here, with no enzyme additions, which is way out of line with the normal, highly commercial practices of practically all of the bodegas in Rueda. As always, it’s what in the bottle that counts, and these are wines that transcend Rueda. All of them see much longer fermentations than is the norm for Rueda, in a variety of vessels, mostly French oak. The top bottlings here will age effortlessly and show the minerality and complexity of serious white Burgundy after a couple of years. Also worth noting is that, the wines are made with the consulting help of Rafael Palacios, who makes some of Galicia’s most highly regarded white wines at As Sortes, his bodega in Valdeorras.

In 2013, Ossian was bought by José MarÃa Ruiz (from the top house Pago de Carraovejas from the Ribera del Duero) and Zaccagnini left the company.
