Gianfranco Fino gives us another treat in the form of the decadently rich and unctuous 2016 Primitivo di Manduria Es. This is a landmark wine from Puglia that expertly weaves together concentration, richness and power, resulting in one of the most emblematic wines to emerge from the sun-scorched instep of Italy's boot. This Primitivo, drawn from vineyards less than 100 meters from the sea-level stretch of Greek settlements along the Ionian, weighs in with a Herculean 16.5% alcoholic content. Thanks to nine months of barrique aging, you get plenty of sweet spice and mesquite on the close. The 2016 vintage offers bright fruit with plum, prune and dried blackberry, perfect for a heavy potato, tomato and red meat stew. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
(ES means wild passion, a passion which does not give into rules or compromises. It is the expression of instinct into wine.) - Gambero Rosso 2011: Tre Bicchieri-Award! : Very high quality. The nose offers a broad, intense, spice-and-balsam bouquet with notes of tobacco and wild berries tot the fore. The palate is rich, full, deep, elegant and fresh despite rich alcohol and sweet fruit notes with a long expansive finish.
- Duemilavini 2011: 5 Grappoli!
- Veronelli 2011: Super Tre Stelle!
- Duemilavini 2011: 5 Grappoli

Start winegrowing in 2004 and make the best wine in Italy 10 years later? Sounds like a romantic dream, but Gianfranco Fino has only just done it. He started in Manduria with a small plot of land with 50-year-old Primitivo vines, striving for an extremely low yield per vine and, unlike many other winemakers, relying on the naturally occurring wild yeasts. Slowly he expanded the number of hectares and also planted Negroamaro.
A perfectionist with an eye for detail who does everything differently in the vineyard than the rest. He even lets his grapes dry on the vine for a while for even more flavor and sugar concentration. Although this reduces the alcohol percentage to a great height, without disturbing the balance in the wine. That drive and idiosyncratic approach has ensured that Fino's wines are among the absolute top in Italy, as witnessed by the superlatives in Gambero Rosso. His achievements have also definitively established Puglia's name as a reference for quality wine.
