Description
The origins of the winery date back to the mid-19th century and floated on the vineyards of the Amoignon family. The name Amoignon was exchanged for Matrot during the First World War because that name had since been married. Thierry and Pascale Matrot are now in charge and both of their daughters also work in the company. Domaine Matrot produces a rich range of Burgundy wines from the Cote de Beaune, both white and red and from basic wines to premier cru wines.
The MEURSAULT-CHARMES 1ER CRU is of course a 100% Chardonnay from the Meursault appellation and from the famous Charmes Premier Cru vineyard. Les Charmes is considered the archetype of Meursault wines. This appellation is the largest of the Meursault Premier Cru wines. Matrot owns four plots, 70% of which are located in Charmes Dessus. The grapes are harvested by hand with natural yeasts. The whole bunches are pressed and then left to rest for 24 hours, followed by settling and pouring into barrels. The wine ferments in temperature-controlled barrels and undergoes complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 15 months on its lees in oak barrels between 1 and 3 years old and then a further 3 months of aging in steel barrels to prepare the wine for bottling.
Les Charmes is a very well balanced wine with both the fullness of the Charmes and the minerality and elegance of the Charmes. Charming on the inside but powerful on the palate with a soft and full finish. The Matrot Meursault Charms Premier Cru has a lively fresh bouquet with citrus notes of yellow plums with a mix of flint and pure fruit. The aromas are characteristic of clay-limestone soils and in particular the subsoil of limestone rocks. The palate is well defined with good weight with notes of slivered almonds, a hint of ginger and some vanilla and brioche in the finish.

The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes unwinds in the glass with scents of pear, apple, oatmeal, fresh mint and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, there's depth and concentration here, with the lively acidity to balance it. This is a Charmes that will drink well young.
As I wrote last year, the style at this important 19-hectare domaine is pure and understated, minimal wood influence meaning that it is the grapes —and the climats that shape them—that are front and center at all times, and positive evolution is taking place: Matrot is experimenting with longer élevage for some of her more exalted appellations, and in response to the problems of premature oxidation, bottling now takes place by gravity, with more attention given to dissolved oxygen levels. The 2018 vintage has turned out very well, producing elegant and nicely balanced wines, and some 2017s, revisited from bottle, surpassed my high expectations formed last year. Savvy consumers will take note of the domaine's under-the-radar wines, especially their emblematic red Blagny from La Pièce Sous Le Bois.

The 2020 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru comes from three parcels, 70% Charmes-Dessus and 30% Charmes-Dessous, has a beautifully defined bouquet with no new oak, despite its subtle creaminess implying there might be, say 20% or so. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tension, taut and quite saline with an edgy, quite saline finish not unlike a Puligny. Razor-sharp Meursault!

Domaine Thierry Matrot is one of several estates in Meursault given new impetus by the next generation – in this instance, sisters Elsa and Adèle Matrot. “Because of the heat, we lost between 30% and 50% of the crop, and we had to make sure we took out all the raisined berries,” Elsa Matrot explained. “We started picking on August 17 with the Pinot Noir and finished on August 25. We were worried about the forecast and it was very warm. We were looking at 13.6° natural alcohol on the Volnay Santenots and the seeds were brown, so we didn’t want to wait. We were supposed to start around August 20. There was hydric stress where the soils are shallow, but most of the time there was just a bit of sunburn. But we didn’t haven’t any differences in maturity. The reds underwent a five- to six-day cold soak and all the fruit is de-stemmed. Yields were normal for the whites, around 40–45hl/ha.” This was an impressive set of 2020s to follow their superb 2019s, not least a wonderful Puligny Les Chalumaux, a great Meursault-Charmes and a fine Auxey-Duresses Village that demonstrates that quality control is operating at all levels. Time to discover this domaine if you haven’t already.
