Description
The wine offer of the Loire Valley is nothing but diverse, and Vouvray is the only region that best typifies this diversity. Granted, Vouvray is all about one variety: Chenin Blanc. Vouvray is located in the coolest part of the Loire and the climate has the most influence on the wine style. In colder years, increased acidity lends itself to both still and sparkling wines that can be dry, semi-dry, or medium dry.
Domaine Huet is without a doubt Reference for top wines in the Loire! Created in 1928, Domaine Huet has three special and different terroirs: Le Mont with 8 hectares, Le Haut-Lieu with 9 hectares and Le Clos de Bourg with 6 hectares surrounded by a stone wall. We are located east of Tours in the Loire. Since 1990, Huet has been one of the forerunners of biodynamic viticulture. This cultivation method, which fully respects the soil, the plant and the environment, ensures that the Chenin Blanc here shows its true character and authenticity. In the wine cellar, the wines ferment in a mix of old oak barrels (demi muids) and stainless steel tanks. Fermentation starts with the natural, own yeast. After the first fermentation, no lactic acid fermentation follows so that the wines retain their characteristic 'fraicheur'.
The Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec 2021 opens with a bright and elegant, finely chalky bouquet of ripe and juicy, well-concentrated fruit. Richer and more intense on the nose than the ascetic Haut-Lieu, it reveals delicate lemon fruit mixed with pure chalk notes. Accordingly, the taste is structured and round, but also refined and very elegant, with round and juicy fruit, very fine tannins and a high energy level thanks to the fine mineral acidity and tension. Very charming, complex and probably with a certain amount of residual sugar, this is another long-distance runner that is already a great pleasure to drink at this early stage. It has great potential. 94/100 Parker.

The 2021 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec opens with a clear and elegant, finely chalky bouquet of ripe and juicy, well-concentrated fruits. It is richer and more intense on the nose than the ascetic Haut-Lieu and reveals delicate lemon fruit intermingled with pure chalk notes. Accordingly, the palate is textured and round yet also refined and very elegant, with round and juicy fruit, very fine tannins and a high energy level due to its finely mineral acidity and tension. Only three wines have been produced from the 2021 vintage at Domaine Huet, all dry. The trio is accompanied by the 2017 Pétillant Brut (which I didn't taste, though) and the noble sweet 2018 Cuvée Constance, about which I will report next week in context with other vintages (2016, 2015 and 2009). Huet has also re-released the 2008 Le Mont Demi-Sec. From the German importer Vinatural, I also received older vintages of diverse categories, so all of the following notes were written in the last week of March this year.
2021 wasn't easy, and in the end, Allan made dry Vouvrays only. Severe frosts in the first week of April set a first warning after a very early spring that had already started in January. However, the vines were able to resist and preserve some of their future bunches. April, May and June brought rainy episodes, and the vines that had suffered from frost were particularly receptive to attacks by mildew, according to the vintage report. In June, the vines "grew at a frenetic pace. Under an ever-intense pressure of mildew, attention and responsiveness were of utmost importance." The sun alternated with the rain throughout July, and at the beginning of August, temperatures cooled below seasonal norms, slowing down the maturity of the future harvest. Under these conditions, the acidity was preserved and the sugar levels rose slowly, shaping the contours of a quintessential dry vintage.

From: Chenin Blanc: Wait a Sec (Sep 2022)
The 2021 Clos du Bourg Sec is an ample, full bodied wine with a stream of acidity. Pure, floral and fragrant with aromas of pineapple, violets and fresh grapes. While rich, it is light in sensation, like a cloud of Chenin filling the mouth, and finishes with a fine, almost powdery and chalky texture.

Domaine Huet was founded in 1928 by Victor Huet and is an iconic domain in the Loire. His son Gaston now owns thirty hectares of chenin blanc, divided over three parcels: Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Le Clos du Bourg. The estate was one of the forerunners of biodynamic viticulture in the French vineyard. This method, in which respect for the soil, the plant and the environment is paramount, ensures that the chenin blanc shows its true character and authenticity.
The suppleness of the brown clay of Le Haut-Lieu, the chiseled flint of Le Mont and the roundness of the limestone of Le Clos du Bourg give the Chenin grape wines an incomparable elegance. During the harvest, the ripe grapes are cut away separately in different phases, resulting in the different wine types. This is actually comparable to the German approach of Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, etc. The terms sec and demi-sec have therefore nothing to do with the names used in Champagne, because there it is a matter of dossage.
All wines, from dry/sec, semi-dry/demi-sec and sweet/moëlleux are of top quality, very precisely made and excellent for storage. In addition, the wines of Huet have a wonderful freshness to perfectly balance the little residual sweetness.
