Very tasty, elegant Pinot Noir from the New Zealand winery Clos Henri, a special project in Marlborough that was started by the famous Bourgeois wine family from Sancerre, France.

Following French tradition, the vines are also close together here to increase mutual competition and thus limit the growth power of the vines. The young pinot vines are on three different types of soil: broadbridge, wither clays, greywacke river stone. All grapes are picked in the early mornings to preserve the fresh and fruity character. For this reason too, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then matured in large oak barrels (7,500 litres) for 11 months. Large wooden barrels give less 'wood aromas' than small wooden barrels. This preserves the aromatic intensity of Pinot Noir.

In the glass, the Clos Henri Pinot Noir is light ruby red. With youthful aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries in the nose, alternating with subtle layers of herbs and liquorice. In the mouth, the plums and cherries dominate but then make way for herbs and wood tones. Slender tannins, a juicy freshness with a soft, peppery aftertaste. This wine is certified organic.

Delicious with grilled portobello mushrooms. Also delicious slightly chilled at the barbecue on a summer evening.
