Description
Château la Négly is located in the Languedoc, on the banks of the Étang de Pissévache on the foothills of the La Clape Massif. Négly is owned by the Paux-Rosset family, and daughter Marion makes the wine, assisted by oenologist Claude Gros. The great diversity of soils, height difference and location (up to ten meters from the tide's edge!) ensures a great variety in style and strength, but there is one characteristic that unites all wines: great precision and a strong degree of minerality. The quality of Négly has not gone unnoticed by Parker: he has repeatedly given high ratings (up to 99 points) to various Négly wines!
The grapes come from an old vineyard of only 3.2 HA. Only a few thousand bottles of this top wine are made and the Netherlands only receives a few boxes of this top wine. Despite a huge list of dessert-sounding descriptions - blackberries, vanilla, baking spices, blueberries, licorice - the La Négly La Clape La Porte du Ciel is a dry, savory wine full of character. A big, rich, Syrah-based offering matured in new French oak for two years, it's full-bodied and velvety in texture - and surprisingly easy to drink given its size and strength, finishing with an almost salty note and incredible length . (96-98)/100 Parker.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount . There's never a lack of intensity in the Negly wines, and the 2018 La Clape La Porte du Ciel continues that, boasting immense color and bold aromas of baked plums, spice cake and vanilla. Mostly Syrah aged in new French oak (the balance is Grenache), it's full-bodied and powerful, delivering mouth-coating flavor of mixed berries, with a rich, creamy texture and a lengthy finish that's framed by gently dusty tannins, a touch of warmth and hints of licorice. It should drink well on release and for a decade or more after that.
This estate in the La Clape appellation has made a huge reputation as one of the top red wine producers in the Languedoc, crafting massive yet balanced and even somewhat elegant wines from the region's classic grape varieties. The Paux-Rosset family, with help from consultant Claude Gros, consistently makes terrific wine, with the big mystery being how so many of the descriptors can add up to something that sounds like dessert, yet the wines come across as savory and easy to drink. If I knew how they were able to do it, I'd start my own consulting business. Instead, I'm just left to enjoy and marvel at their results. Don't overlook the affiliated properties, listed separately: Clos des Truffiers, Château la Vernède (including a 2019 red made without added sulfites), and Domaine de Boède.
2020 Château La Négly La Porte du Ciel
Rating
98
Picked approximately 10 days earlier than normal, the 2020 La Clape La Porte du Ciel (a prospective blend of two barrels) shows more expressive Syrah character than the 2019, with hints of cracked pepper and black licorice accenting wild blueberries. It's full-bodied, creamy and lush, supple and rich, yet not heavy, with a long, gently briny finish.
