Description
Since its takeover in 1995 by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma, chateau Giscours with its fantastic terroir has made a comeback. The domain covers more than 80 hectares of vineyard and produces a very reliable but above all classic Margaux with a lot of depth. The Giscours is a beautiful vintage. In the glass it has a beautiful dark purple color - The 2021 Giscours is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with beautiful notes of espresso, red fruit, (cherry, raspberry) licorice, leather and has a very refined scent of flowers and fruit with non-dominant but beautifully present oak notes. In the mouth the wine is round, juicy and can be drunk now but can also be stored for another 30 years.

2021 Giscours
RP (93-95)
The 2021 Giscours is immensely promising and shows just how far this important estate has come in the last few years. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper, violets, sweet forest floor and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with terrific depth at the core, ripe tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish. With wines like this, we're back to a level of quality that Giscours hasn't routinely attained since the 1970s! The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot; and even if by the standards of the last decade, that isn't a particularly elevated percentage of Cabernet, this is nonetheless a very Cabernet-driven wine in style. Tasted six times.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the 2020 Giscours reveals a deep garnet-purple color and compelling notes of crushed redcurrants, plum preserves and Morello cherries, leading to hints of lavender, wild sage, damp soil and black truffles with a touch of licorice. The medium-bodied palate bursts with vibrant red and black fruits and lots of savory accents, supported by soft, very well managed tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 Giscours is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the best Giscours in recent memory. Silky and impeccable in its balance, the 2012 possesses magnificent elegance that brings out its pedigreed personality. Rose petal, lavender, spice, gravel and black cherry all come together, framed by silky tannins that wrap it all up. The 2021 is less aromatic than most recent vintages, but the depth here is considerable, as is the potential. Taste two times.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Giscours is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol and mocha fill out the layers nicely. There's a good bit of Merlot in this year, which lends quite a bit of mid-palate juiciness and textural depth, but there is also plenty of supporting structure underneath. The 2020 is both flamboyant and serious, a pretty appealing combination, I have to say. Tasted two times.
