Description
Sacha Lichine settled in La Motte-en-Provence in 2006 and bought Château d'Esclans from a Swedish family. Sacha is the son of world-famous winemaker and writer Alexis Lichine. It may sound arrogant, but his goal was to make the best rosé in the world that could compete with the top Montrachets. To realize this ambition, he left the vinification to Patrick Léon, who was the winemaker of Mouton Rothschild for 23 years, with as a result, for example, Whispering Angel has been sold out in no time for years. Château d'Esclans was voted 'The European Winery of The Year 2014' by Wine Enthusiast magazine at the end of November. It is the first time in history that a winery that mainly produces rosé wines has been awarded this 'Oscar for wines'.
The Whispering Angel is one of the most popular roses internationally and, in addition to the cult rose, the Garrus is the wine with which Chateau d'Esclans has achieved world fame. This rosé owes its name to the chapel on the estate where 2 whispering angels are depicted on the wall. This image is also depicted on the label of the Whispering Angel. The Whispering Angel has the typical light gray-pink color that characterizes a provence rose. The rosé has an aromatic bouquet, excelling in minerality and elegance. A beautiful glass of wine, elegant, broad and rich with a beautiful freshness and light spiciness. Intense taste with aromas of apricots, red berries and strawberries.
The vineyards of Chateau d'Esclans are very conveniently located in a south-westerly position on a clayey and calcareous soil. The Garrus is made exclusively from 80 year old Grenache and Rolle sticks. The grapes are first tasted, then picked by hand very early in the morning (so that you do not get spontaneous fermentation due to the heat) and sorted for quality up to three times. Maceration between 10 and 12 gr. C, resulting in a maximum of fruit and a selection of pure 'free-run' juice for pressing. A full eight-month Burgundian Batonnage takes place in 600 liter oak barrels, which is fully temperature controlled between 12 and 16 degrees.

From: 2021 Rosé – New Releases (Jun 2021)
Brilliant peach skin. Red berries and pit fruits on the nose, and a floral nuance in the background. Silky and open-knit, showing good depth as well as energy to the red currant and nectarine flavors, which pick up a refreshingly bitter orange zest quality on the back half. Finishes long and juicy, with a repeating floral note and subtle grip. Don't hate on this wine just because it’s popular. - Josh Raynolds
