Description
Beaux Frères , Domaine Serene, is the leading wine company in Oregon, founded by Michael G. Etzel, brother-in-law (“Beaux Frères” in French) of wine critic Robert Parker. First launched in 1996 as a companion label to the Beaux Freres Vineyard, The Belles Soeurs is a hand-selected barrel reserve. Beaux Frères is located on the most prestigious terroirs of the Willamette Valley. Since their first vintage in 1991, Beaux Frères' philosophy has remained the same: to produce a world-class Pinot Noir with small, balanced yields and ripe, healthy fruit that represents the essence of the vineyard. Beaux Frères has been operating completely biodynamic and organic since 2002. Beaux Frères ownership is now shared by Michael G. Etzel and Artemis Domaines, adding a unique Oregon property to a family of world-class estates including Château Latour, Domaine d'Eugenie, Clos de Tart, Château-Grillet, Champagne Jacquesson and Bouchard Père et Fils in France, and Eisele Vineyard in Napa. With this evolution, the heart of Beaux Frères' winemaking traditions over the decades is now linked to its motherland.
The Beaux Frères Belles Soeurs Cuvée Pinot Noir has a medium ruby-purple color in the glass. The Pinot Noir The Belles Soeurs has tempting wild red and black berries with hints of garrigue and tea leaves and a touch of forest floor. The taste is silky and intense with layered, graphite-tinged fruit and a very long finish that stands out for its purity and persistent perfume.

About Beaux Frères Vineyard
The Beaux Frères Vineyard is located on an 88-acre farm atop Ribbon Ridge near Newberg, Oregon. Tall and stately Douglas firs cover nearly 50 acres of the farm, while the residential and winery buildings take up another 8 acres. The vineyard is located on 30 acres (24 of which are planted) of steep, continuous south-east, south and south-west facing slopes with Willakenzie soils at an elevation of approximately 400 feet. Plantings began in 1988 with closely planted Pinot Noir vines at a density of approximately 2,200 plants per acre. The oldest vines in the vineyard are now 34 years old and the vineyard as a whole is a mix of homegrown Pommard and Wädenswil clones and younger Dijon clones on phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.
The Upper Terrace Vineyard, located just north and slightly higher than the Beaux Frères Vineyard, was first planted in 2000. It consists of Dijon clones of Pinot Noir covering approximately 9 acres of the 40-acre site – the remainder is densely forested and lush with flora and fauna. The farm team have now embarked on their own nursery project, grafting healthy cuttings from our most exceptional vines onto resilient rootstocks that they hope to have in our vineyards for generations. This is the source of vines for a third property that connects the two previous vineyards and had its first harvest in 2023. Until now this has been called The Bridge Vineyard.

The 2021 Pinot Noir The Belles Soeurs opens from bright orange peel to a deeper core of pomegranate, raspberry, dried earth and botanicals, really blossoming as it spends time in the glass and from day to day after the bottle is opened. The medium-bodied palate balances concentrated, floral flavors, chalky tannins and juicy acidity, and it offers a long, spicy finish with a fan of amaro-like spices. This is fresh and easy to drink without sacrificing any complexity!

From: Sitting Pretty: Oregon's New Release Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Beyond (Jan 2024)
The 2021 Pinot Noir The Belles Sœurs wafts up with a dramatic blend of violets, lavender, hints of underbrush and dusty dried strawberries. This is graceful and finessed with pretty red and blue fruit depths lifted by cooling acidity. Spicy and sleek, the 2021 tapers off lightly tannic with a pleasantly bitter tinge, leaving slowly fading hints of licorice. Belles Sœurs is the understated beauty of this range and intended to be the more approachable Pinot in the portfolio; it succeeds in every way imaginable.

There’s a lot to like about the 2021s from Beaux Frères. I had the opportunity to taste through this portfolio multiple times while in Oregon and even follow some of the wines over the course of twenty-four hours. While most will require cellaring to show their best, the balance and complexity within are spellbinding. My tasting with Mikey Etzel put the longevity of these wines into perspective, as we tasted a 2010 The Beaux Frères Vineyard Pinot Noir next to the 2021. Another considerable standout was The Belles Sœurs, which Etzel sees as his more approachable Pinot Noir. The wine succeeds at being very likable, but that’s not to say that it’s simple or fruity. Instead, it’s a dynamic Pinot that energizes the palate even as it bombards the senses with layers of complexity. The Upper Terrace Pinot Noir is the most youthfully brooding effort and likely has the most potential. As for Sequitur Pinot Noir, a vineyard planted by Mike Etzel that runs like a continuation of The Upper Terrace, only time will tell what its dark depths may one day reveal. Beaux Frères comfortably remains one of the icons of the region.

Wijnhuis
