Description
The origins of Pazo de Barrantes go back to the beginning of the 16th century and since then it has been linked to the Cebrián-Sagarriga family - yes, the same family as the Marques de Murrieta. At Pazo de Barrantes they have embraced a new challenge as a tribute to one of the world's most extraordinary grape varieties, the Albariño and from September 2021 the new Pazo de Barrantes will be on the market. Incomparable to the previous version. The wine has matured for 2 years (more than a year longer than the previous version), had a light wood aging, everything Sur lie so on its lees and the presentation has also been completely changed.
It all starts with the unique terroir with its own 12 hectare vineyard in the heart of the Salnes Valley. Blessed with a unique microclimate, it benefits daily from the hard work and care, expertise, passion and skill of the family. More than 10 years have gone into this new project, starting with the careful care of the vineyards to achieve the optimum health and quality of the grapes. Yields have been seriously reduced and an extensive selection of grapes has been made, both in the vineyards and when they reach the winery. Using a slow, gradual maturation process with very strict quality parameters, the best juice is selected that is suitable for ageing. In fact, in the winery, only the highest quality raw material (the grapes) is handled with the utmost care and minimal intervention takes place. Above all, it is given all the time it needs. As a result, the 2019 vintage has been significantly reduced (more than 40%), resulting in the production of only 95,097 bottles, all of which are now also numbered.
By controlling the fermentation temperature in stainless steel tanks, we can slow down the fermentation and obtain greater purity and aromatic intensity. After two months of contact with the lees, the wine acquires texture, while seven months of rest in the tank improves its balance and harmony. A new ingredient has also been added: wood for a small part of the wine. Approximately 15%, is aged in acacia barrels, which adds volume, complexity and depth. Finally, the bottle aging process has been extended to more than a year and a half, allowing the wine to become fully defined and balanced and express its incredible potential. The finishing touch to the project is the new packaging that best expresses the personality of the new Pazo Barrantes and has opted for a traditional Burgundian bottle with a new label printed on heavy, waterproof cotton paper imitating artisanal printing techniques. The label shows the winery seen from the vineyard. After 30 years, the new Barrantens is baptized as the Gran Vino Pazo de Barrantes 2019.

The 2020 Gran Vino Albariño, the second vintage after the transformation, is a representation of their property, the eight pagos, or vineyards, they have in their 12 hectares of vineyards plus one hectare they rent. The grapes were destemmed and the must let to settle to ferment in stainless steel for 60 days, followed by two months with lees and seven months after being racked off the lees, then a small percentage was put in acacia wood barrels for a short time to search for more complexity, structure and depth. They found that acacia is a wood in harmony with Albariño, even when newer. The bottles were kept for a further 20 months before being released. It has 13.5% alcohol, a low pH (3.26) and notable acidity (7.2 grams of tartaric acid per liter of wine), and it has finesse and elegance. It's sharp, with great aromatic intensity, less explosive and balsamic than the previous year, a remarkable mid-palate and a long, clean and precise finish. 78,533 bottles and 1,596 magnums were produced. It was bottled in June 2021.
Pazo Barrantes is the Rías Baixas winery from Marqués de Murrieta, a property with 12 hectares of vineyards in eight separate plots in the Valle del Salnés, around the winery in Barrantes (Ribadumia), plus one hectare they rent from the archbishop. They did a complete transformation of the wines, which were absent from the market for two years so they could increase the élevage and offer wines that have more complexity and nuance. Production averages some 110,000 bottles.
2020 was a warm year with an early cycle, but the first half of August saw cooler temperatures and more rain, which delayed the harvest to more normal dates than they expected, the 10th of September. The grand vin released now is from 2018, a cooler and wetter season. The forecast was for a later harvest, but the warm weather in August and September pushed the harvest to the 20th of September, one week earlier than anticipated. They got healthy grapes with ideal balance between ripeness and acidity.

Focused, ripe, mineral and intense, with lemon rind, stones and sea salt. Very tense and integrated, with tangy, bright acidity chiseled to the round, textured palate. An exceptional, transparent yet serious albarino here. Irresistible now. Drink on release or hold.

Brilliant, green-hued straw. Aromas of nectarine, orange, Anjou pear and white flowers, with a hint of fennel in the background. Fleshy orchard and pit fruit flavors tighten up with air. Shows very good energy on the long, chewy, mineral-driven finish, which leaves pear skin and honeysuckle notes behind.

The Creixell family, which owns the iconic Marques de Murrieta bodega in Rioja, has its roots here (the name gives strong hints to Galicia’s ties with Ireland, doesn’t it?), dating back to the 15th century, but the winery itself was only established in 1991. Situated in the Val do Salnés, Pazo Barrantes owns 12 hectares of vines, all Albariño, from which they make two wines, both of which go through partial to full malo, the classic in stainless steel tanks and the Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes in oak barrels. In past years I found the wines here to be solid, playing it pretty safe and staying in their lane, but these new releases show much more intrigue, textural complexity and detail. The skills of winemaker Maria Vargas, who is also in charge in Rioja, are really showing here now. Worth noting is that the old-school, chubby bottles are pretty cool as well. They’d make great candle-holders for romantic dinners featuring lots of Rías Baixas alongside a spread of oysters, razor clams, crab, mussels and barnacles.
