Description
The 'Albe' is a tribute to the beautiful wines from this area and is made from grapes from different vineyards. The name refers to the location of the vineyards, from southeast to southwest, which means that the vines are awakened three times by the rising sun. The differences in soil and location give the wine an enormous complexity and layering.
The Barolo Albe 2020 presents itself with an expressive nose full of aromas of fresh cherries, crushed stones and roses. The wine has a lively and energetic structure, with a generous mouthfeel and a youthful tannic structure, enriched with notes of raspberry and orange peel. The finish is long and textural.
The 2020 Vajra Barolo Albe has been voted in Wine Spectator's top 10 for best wines 2024
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The GD Vajra 2020 Barolo Albe offers great value for money. The wine shows fresh primary fruit without the overripe notes often found in this vintage. The fruit is dark and savoury, with a significant mineral component. The bouquet is rich with dark berry, plum, granite and a dry note reminiscent of crushed slate. The tannins are powerful and give the wine additional ageing potential.
Vineyard and Terroir
The vineyards for Albe are located at an altitude of between 380 and 480 meters above sea level, with exposures ranging from south-southeast to southwest. Aldo Vajra was one of the first to embrace organic farming in Piedmont in 1971. The vineyards have been maintained in a sustainable and organic way for almost 50 years, with great attention to biodiversity.
Harvest and Winemaking
In 2020, the fruit for Barolo Albe was harvested between October 1st and 14th. The grapes were sorted by hand three times: directly on the vine, as whole bunches on the sorting tables and finally as loose berries after destemming. Vinification took place in specially designed vertical tanks, with gentle punch-downs and pumping over. Maceration lasted between 27 and 57 days, with the longest period taking place under a submerged hood. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel in the spring.
Maturation
The wine matured for 26 months in large Slavonian oak barrels of 40, 50 and 75 hectoliters. Bottling took place on July 10, 2023.

You can't beat this value. The G.D. Vajra 2020 Barolo Albe is buttoned up with fresh primary fruit, and the wine does not have that hint of over-ripeness that is found across this vintage. The fruit is dark and savory, and there is a big mineral component to match, but the bouquet is nicely redolent of dark currant, plum, granite and a raspy dry note that brings crushed shale to mind. The tannins are quite impactful, and they give this wine extra runway for moderate bottle aging.

This is a bright and lively Barolo showing sliced oranges, raspberries, crushed stones and rose petals on the nose. Medium-bodied, with sharp acidity and tight tannins. Lots of energy. Try from 2027.

Aldo Vaira took control of the family vineyards in 1968, when he was just 15 years old. Today, G.D. Vajra is one of the Piedmont region’s most recognized estates and comprises 150 acres, mostly around the commune of Barolo. Aldo and his wife, Milena, are joined by their children, Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro. Though there are three Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGA) bottlings at the top of Vajra’s range, it’s Barolo Albe that best represents the winery’s elegant, high-elevation style, delivering consistent quality for an attractive price. Sourced from parcels ranging from 1,250 to 1,585 feet in elevation, the various lots macerated for one to three months, then aged 26 months in 4,000-, 5,000- and 7,500-liter Slavonian oak casks.

From: 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence (Jan 2024)
The 2020 Barolo Albe is light-bodied, elegant and gracious. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, spice, new leather and dried herbs are all nicely lifted. Bright acids and nervy tannins give the wine its shape and overall character. The Albe is meant to be an entry-level offering, but I find it often blossoms with a year or two in bottle. The Albe is not terribly complex in 2020, but it is a delight.
- By Antonio Galloni on November 2023
There’s plenty to like in these new releases from the Vajra family. Starting with the 2020 Barolos, the wines are gracious and finely sketched, with the personality of each wine clearly defined. The Bricco delle Viole is especially sublime and well worth seeking out. As always, the Barolos offer a compelling mix of classicism and contemporary finesse. The entry-level offerings are a bit mixed this year, largely a reflection of the challenging 2022 harvest. Readers will find several new wines made from nearly extinct varieties that show plenty of intrigue and that are sure to enrich this range going forward.
