Description
DuMol Estate is a fine example of a wine estate that has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court. Founded in 1996, DuMOL is dedicated to crafting vineyard-focused Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from distinctive locations in Russia's cool-climate River Valley. Andy Smith - the Winemaker means by vineyard oriented “As a 'vineyard up' winery we stay very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.” ANDY SMITH
Winemaker, viticulturist and partner Andy Smith leads a small and experienced team at DuMOL to create wines of depth, clarity and elegance through attention to detail in the vineyards and vintage-specific viticulture. DuMOL believes that the farmer's footsteps are the best fertilizer. Building on twenty-five years of experience, DuMOL also grows and produces small amounts of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Mencía from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. The entire DuMOL portfolio is released via mailing list assignments, with select wines distributed to top restaurants around the world.
The Chardonnay Chloe Vineyard comes from the oldest vines in the Russian River Valley inn Sonoma. As usual, it is the broadest, richest and most Californian of the four classic Sonoma County designate Chardonnays. The intrinsic vineyard-derived vigor and intense aromas come from low-yielding old vines planted in shallow seabeds with just the right amount of clay to give body and roundness. At harvest we press these thick-skinned grapes very slowly, to capture every last drop of natural fruit extract that seems to rise from the deep vine roots themselves, through the juice and into the tough skins. This high content of "dry extract" provides the density and richness that we observe in the wine every year.
The aromas of the wine are bright and expansive with yellow peach, nectarine and white flowers. A suggestion of flint and spearmint adds detail. Viscosity and opulence are immediate on the palate with mandarin oil, honeycomb and candied ginger. In the deep mid-palate, the texture of the wine builds effortlessly: lemon oil, apricot and quince. Matching this structured vintage, the wine is quite framed with precise, balanced acidity and aromas of grapefruit pith on the finish. The wine is bottled unfiltered. The 2020 has received a whopping 96/100 points from Parker.

The 2020 Chardonnay Chloe, from the El Diablo Vineyard and Lorenzo Vineyard, offers an incredible combination of concentrated flavors and energetic acidity. It has intense aromas of apricot and quince with nuances of elderflower, brioche, cashews and honey, pleasing, flinty reduction and classy new oak spices. The full-bodied palate explodes with layers of ripe fruits supported by a satiny texture and focused acidity, and it has a dynamic finish that segues from stone fruits to flowers and spicy accents. Wow! About 1,000 cases were made.

The DuMol Estate is located in the extreme southwest of the Russian River Valley subregion in the well-known Sonoma Valley. The winery has 25 hectares in production that are cultivated according to the rules of biodynamics. The vineyards are on an eastern slope and therefore enjoy the morning sun. DuMol's vineyards are located close to the Pacific in the so-called "Cool Climate" zone. In the early morning these vineyards are covered with a thin blanket of fog and in the afternoon it becomes pleasantly warm, but a light breeze from the Pacific keeps the temperature from reaching the extreme.
DuMol Estate was created through a collaboration between Kerry Murphy and Michael Verlander. Later, the talented winemaker Andy Smith joins them. Since the beginning in 1996, DuMol has been able to produce beautiful wines, mainly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also Viognier, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon should not be missed. Most of the grapes come from Green Valley, an area that falls within the boundaries of Russian River Valley. In addition, the winery obtains grapes from several winegrowers on the basis of long-term contracts. These vintners grow their vines in Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros.
After 20 successful years, a new winery of no less than 19,600 square meters is being built. This gives DuMol a capacity of 20,000 boxes, but only 15,000 are produced annually. In this way, DuMol can guarantee its quality annually. The vinification room is equipped with the most advanced technology and arranged in such a way that world-class wines can be produced here. The viticultural approach is fully adapted to each plot with its own soil type and microclimate. DuMol's goal is to produce wines that are clean, vibrant, pure and intense. The wines are not named after the plot or the region, but after the names of clients and family members.
The winery remained under the radar of the general public for a while, partly because Michael and Kerry did little to promote their wines. Their philosophy was that quality will speak for itself. That is now getting over and the winery has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court.
“As a 'vineyard up' winery, we remain very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.”
