Description
This cru belongs to the Nony family since 1934. Damien and Jean-Antoine Nony are now continuing the business. At this price, it's hard to find a better St. Emilion for volume and roundness. The terroir is partly at the foot of the plateau and partly on the plateau itself. Michel Roland and Louis Mitjavile (l'Aurage) are the advisors.
The Château Grand Mayne matures for 18 months in oak barrels, 60% of which are new. The wine is a blend of 80% Merlot / 20% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years. The taste of the wine can best be described as stylish and elegant with black cherries and cassis. Opaque purple-black in color, the 2020 Grand Mayne unfolds slowly in the glass, revealing beautiful notes of ripe black plums, dark chocolate-covered cherries and blackberry tart, plus hints of licorice, cracked black pepper and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with rich black fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, long ending and beautifully perfumed.
Source: https://grand-mayne.com "A wine must reflect its terroir, its origins. We strongly believe that the uniqueness of the vineyard's location is fundamental in the conception of a great wine. There can never be a great wine without a great vineyard." Jean-Antoine & Damien NONY In this respect, the wines of Château Grand Mayne are completely expressive of their place of origin. They are proud representatives of the best terroirs of the western hillside and foot of St. Émilion, composed of clay and limestone. A subtle blend of merlot and cabernet franc, the wines of Grand Mayne combine the power of fruit, elegant tension and finesse. Known for their excellent aging potential, the recent vintages of Château Grand Mayne are now more open and accessible in their early years. "

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Grand Mayne has a very enticing, pure bouquet that unfolds wonderfully in the glass, with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, orange pith and subtle tobacco scents. Well-defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with an impressive backbone. There's a soupçon of creaminess in the second half with a precise, lightly spiced and persistent finish that leaves you wanting more. There's no excuse not to have a few bottles tucked away in your cellar.

From: 2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)
The 2020 Grand Mayne is a powerful, tannic wine. It will be interesting to see if the tannins soften. Even in the early going, the 2020 has a lot of promise. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, new leather, cedar, mint, rose petal and mocha come to life with a bit of time. The 2020 is a gorgeous wine.

From: Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)
The 2020 Grand Mayne is focused and delineated on a nose that offers plenty of finely chiseled scents of black cherry, bilberry, crushed rock and incense, opulent but beautifully controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit on the entry, and laced with graphite, touches of tobacco and minerals. From beginning to end, this 2020 displays wonderful tension, and there is a sense of refinement on the finish that I think has only manifested in vintages of Grand Mayne over the last 5–6 years. This delivers, or perhaps overdelivers considering the price.
