Description
Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montalcino shows how to produce a Sangiovese in our vineyards in Montalcino that can be drunk straight away. For production we use grapes from dedicated vineyards that ensure that they receive the same attention and care as for production of Brunello wines. The manual harvest takes place in October. The selection of the grapes before and after destemming is done by hand. This is followed by natural fermentation without the addition of artificial yeast. The maceration takes place in an open cone-shaped and temperature-controlled environment. The fermentation lasts 18 days. The wine then matures in wood for 12-18 months before it is released onto the market.
The Rosso di Montalcino shows the great potential of the Sangiovese grape without having to wait too many years. The wine has a fruity bouquet with aromas of, among others. cherries followed by soft and elegant tannins on the palate. The aftertaste is long to very long. The wine is ready to drink but can also be kept for years. The Rosso di Montalcino from the Neri Family are also called (and quite rightly) Alternative Brunellos and have often been the precursors of Brunello certified wines.

From: The Pros and Cons of Rosso di Montalcino and Beyond (Jan 2022)
Woodsy wildberries, herbs, pungent florals and underbrush create a dazzling display as the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is soft, juicy and pliant, with lavender-tinged red and black berries that give way to savory mineral tones toward the close. The 2020 keeps the energy high while remaining incredibly pretty through the long finale, where inner violet and sour citrus tones resonate on. This shows the elegance of the vintage with a perfumed and highly pleasurable style.

Casanova di Neri is currently producing two different Rosso di Montalcinos. Their classic Rosso is sourced from 18 hectares within their estate vineyards that produce a more easygoing and drinkable wine that refines for 15 to 18 months in large barrels. However, their Rosso di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is from their newest vineyard in the south-east of Montalcino, and it hails from 50-year-old vines. This wine is fermented in wooden tanks and aged for 12 months in barrel. We can expect to see a Brunello from this same location that will be released in 2023.

Casanova di Neri belongs to a new generation of Brunello producers. The company started in 1971, when Giovanni Neri bought the largest estate in the Montalcino area. The domain is a total of 39 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards. The oldest vineyard is 50 years old. The vineyards are located at an altitude of about 350 meters above sea level. Casanova di Neri is one of the best producers of Brunello wines. The Tenuta Nuova belongs to their very best Brunello where everything is done to pursue the ultimate perfection.
