Description
Vietti is definitely a top domain. Mario Cordero's robust Barolos and Barberas are world class and very scarce! The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages that are allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. Moreover, they were pioneers in bottling “single vineyard” Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piedmont region and now all single vineyard barolos are released by allocation and only a handful of bottles are always available per country. The potential of their wines is unprecedented and from the good years this is 30 years+
The Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo Castiglione are selected from small vineyards spread in the Barolo region. The vines are between 9 and 42 years old, planted on a clay-limestone soil. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with daily immersion for extraction of flavor and color. The wine matures for approximately 30 months in oak barrels and barriques; all plots are fermented and matured individually and are carefully blended by the family and wine master just before bottling. In the glass the wine has a fresh ruby red color with earthy notes in the nose with hints of mint, leather, a bit of truffle and espresso. In the mouth, the Castiglione has a juicy taste with a powerful tannin structure, ending with a long aftertaste in which red fruit dominates.

This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year. It concludes with a salty mineral note that adds focus and elegance.

Extremely perfumed with hibiscus, flowers and watermelon with some fresh cherries. Medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Very solid. Made from about 20 different vineyards. Needs time to soften. Vegan. Drink after 2027.

The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut.

In addition, he brings an extremely good Nebbiolo to the market with the Nebbiolo Langhe Perbacco. This is sufficiently available and very affordable. Since 1974, a select number of Vietti wines (since 1988 only the Barolo Riserva Villero) are labeled with a specially designed, original work of art. The print run of the artwork is equal to the number of bottles of the wine in question that are made in this vintage. The first hundred labels are also signed by the artist himself, so real collector's items!

Only at the beginning of the 20th century did the family decide to start making their own wine. In recent years, no one in Piedmont has set the bar higher than Vietti. All their wines are of exceptionally high quality. Winemaker Luca Currado built on the success of his parents Alfredo and Lucia. The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range.
