Poggio Antico, one of the highest estates in Tuscany, is known for its excellent Brunello di Montalcino and Riserva wines. In 1984, this prestigious estate was acquired by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, and in 2017 it passed into the hands of a Belgian company. This transition marks a new chapter in Poggio Antico's rich history focused on innovation and excellence in wine production.

The strategy to further increase the quality of the wine was reflected in the recent adjustments within the winery. Investments have been made in more cement and steel vats in the fermentation area to enable smaller batch vinifications from specific vineyards. This underlines the commitment to precision and care in the winemaking process.

The innovation also extends to the vineyards themselves. With the addition of two new hectares of vines in the prized I Poggi area and plans to add more new vines in 2021, Poggio Antico shows its ambition to expand its area and increase the diversity of its grape varieties. The replanting in the vineyard that produces the IGT Toscana Madre, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is planned until 2026, indicating a long-term vision for sustainable viticulture.

The core of Poggio Antico's philosophy is the production of Brunello di Montalcino with 100% home-grown Sangiovese grapes. This approach emphasizes the purity of the grape and the expression of the terroir. The wine undergoes a long wood aging period of three years, followed by a year of bottle refinement, adding depth and complexity to the flavor profile.

The vineyards benefit from their location at an altitude of 480 to 570 meters above sea level, where the medium-deep soils with low fertility are enriched with a good amount of gravel and stones (20-30%). This unique composition contributes to the minerality and structure of the wine. Fermentation takes place over a period of 10 days in truncated conical stainless steel and concrete vats at low temperatures (maximum 25°C), followed by an additional maceration of 15 days. After fermentation, the wine matures for 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25 and 40 hl, followed by another 18 months of bottle aging. This careful maturing process results in a complex and elegant wine profile.

The harvest period, from September 20 to 27, 2019, was characterized by cold winter and spring months with temperatures below average, resulting in slow emergence. However, the abundant rainfall during the growing season ensured a perfect balance, crucial for the accumulation of polyphenols and optimal ripeness. The strong temperature fluctuations in September and October enhanced the phenolic component, which enhanced the unique quality of the wine. With a production of 37,800 bottles, this Brunello di Montalcino represents the passion, craftsmanship and unique terroir of Poggio Antico.

The distribution of the Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino and the Riserva takes place via the Place du Bordeaux, with the wines distributed worldwide every year in September among the affiliated wine distributors, including Grandcru wines. This distribution model ensures that Poggio Antico's ever-scarce wines are accessible to enthusiasts around the world, further strengthening the reputation and reach of this exceptional winery.

The Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino and the Riserva are distributed through the Place du Bordeaux - so always around September of the year, the negociances in Bordeaux distribute the always scarce wines worldwide among the only affiliated wine distributors, including Grandcru wines. Poggio Antico is one of the highest estates in Tuscany. In 1984 it was bought by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder and in 2017 by a Belgian company.

Poggio Antico is a certified organic winery starting with the 2020 vintage. Over the past year, the winery has been modified to include more cement and steel vats in the fermentation area. The aim is to pursue smaller batch vinifications from specific vineyards. Poggio Antico has also planted two new hectares of vines in the prized I Poggi area and plans to add more new vines in 2021. There is also a replanting in the vineyard making the IGT Toscana Madre (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) - the replanting will last until 2026.
