Description
Château Le Gay is a respected winery located in the Pomerol appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The estate has a rich history and is known for producing some of the most refined and complex wines in Pomerol. In addition to their main wine, Château Le Gay, they also produce a second wine called Manoir de Gay. The Château Le Gay Pomerol is a lush and beautiful young wine with characters of blackberries, hazelnuts, dark chocolate and black olives. It is full and layered with round, soft tannins and a caressing aftertaste. Great finish. The 2019 vintage has received fantastic scores from all wine critics.
Chateau Le Gay
Vineyard and Terroir :
- Location : Located in the Pomerol appellation, which is known for its clayey soil with high iron oxide content, which contributes to the wines' unique flavor profiles.
- Grape varieties : The vineyard is mainly planted with Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc, which is typical of the region.
Production :
- Winemaking : Château Le Gay follows a careful winemaking method, applying manual harvest and strict selection procedures to use only the best grapes. Fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in French oak barrels.
- Style : The wine is renowned for its depth and concentration, with rich, ripe fruit aromas including blackcurrant, plum and cherry, complemented by complex layers of truffle, cocoa and spice. The tannins are firm but well integrated, which contributes to the wine's longevity.
Reviews :
- International Wine Journalists : Château Le Gay consistently receives high scores from wine critics such as Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Spectator. They praise the wine for its elegance, complexity and potential for long aging.
Manoir de Gay
Vineyard and Terroir :
- Location : Same vineyard as Château Le Gay, with a focus on younger vines and plots not used in the first wine.
- Grape varieties : Mainly Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc.
Production :
- Winemaking : Manoir de Gay undergoes a similar careful winemaking method to Château Le Gay, but with a shorter aging period in oak barrels, resulting in a more approachable wine.
- Style : This second wine offers a more direct and fruity expression, with aromas of ripe red berries, plums and hints of flowers and spices. The tannins are softer and the wine is drinkable sooner than its counterpart.

The 2019 Le Gay is rich and powerful, offering up aromas of cherries, berry fruit liqueur, kirsch and dark chocolate, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's a ripe, heady wine with low acidity and plenty of powdery tannin, showing a touch of alcoholic heat on the finish. From a site that naturally delivers early and elevated maturity, with heat-retentive gravel over clay soils, it's all fermented in barrel to permit extreme selection, picking small lots within parcels in pursuit of optimal maturity. There's no doubting the quality of the site or the attention to detail in the cellar, but to my palate, this flirts with over-ripeness; my score gives it the benefit of the doubt.

This is a luscious and beautiful young wine with blackberry, hazelnut, dark-chocolate and black-olive character. It’s full and layered with round, soft tannins and a caressing finish. Great finish. Seductive young wine. Best after 2027 and onwards.

From: Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Le Gay has quite a Left Bank nose thanks to the potent graphite/pencil box scents that infuse the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, elegant with ample weight on the finish. This is a lovely Pomerol with great promise. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Le Gay is sleek, polished and super-appealing. Best of all, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Black cherry, lavender, cloves, licorice and mocha open effortlessly, giving this mid-weight Pomerol tons of charm and complexity.

Ideally situated on the Pomerol plateau, Château Le Gay used to be owned by the Robin sisters. The Parent family took over the château and its 10,5 hectares in 2002.
Since the, the vineyard and cellar have been constantly evolving. Four new hectares of high-density vines were planted, and more than half of the rest of the plateau land was also restructured. Convinced that "vinification intégrale" fermentation enhances quality, Henri Parent began renovating the Château Le Gay cellar in 2014 (despite its recent renovation in 2003) in order to control the temperature of the 250 barrels during the cold maceration process, as well aw during their fermentation process.
Today, still fervently driven by pursuing quality, we use other techniques such as harvesting in several passes, creating smaller plots within some non-uniform plots and favoring cold maceration methods. Each vine is known and recorded. The vineyards are primarily planted with 90% Merlot, although the proportion of Cabernet Franc should increase a little in the net few years.
Nothing is left to chance to ensure that Château Le Gay keeps progressing.
