Description
Winery Hans Wirsching is one of the most traditional and renowned wineries in Franconia. The family has been growing wine for centuries; since 1630! Today the company is led by Andrea Wirsching and Dr. Heinrich Wirsching.
On 90 hectares in and around Iphofen, mainly dry white wines from Silvaner, Riesling and Scheurebe are produced.
A number of wines are still bottled here in the typical Franconian “Bochsbeutel” bottle, whose name is taken from the word "book", because it fit like a bottle in the bag in which the monks and pilgrims carried their prayer book. It has been a trademark of special wines from Franconia since the early 18th century.
Hans Wirsching is the reference of Franken and the national and international wine press is also full of praise for their wines. Hans Wirsching works with great respect for nature and the environment and in a sustainable way.
The Hans Wirsching Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewächs (VDP. Grosse Lage) comes from the Julius-echter-Berg vineyard, at an altitude of 300-400 meters, located north of Iphofen, about 100 km northwest of Nuremberg on a “Keuper” soil; (sediment of swamp-rich old-growth forests). The wine only ferments and ages on stainless steel to preserve the freshness.
The 2018 Riesling Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg "VDP. Erste Lage" is pure and elegant with a concentrated nose of crushed stone and perfectly ripe Riesling berries. Lush, round and salty, this is a very elegant and concentrated Riesling with mineral, crunchy acidity, and pleasant freshness and with a long finish. The wine certainly needs a few years to get into balance, but then you can enjoy it for decades.

The 2018 Riesling Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg "VDP. Erste Lage" is pure, flinty and elegant on the well-concentrated nose of crushed stones and perfectly ripe Riesling berries. Lush, round and salty, this is a very elegant and concentrated Riesling with a long and tensioned as well as aromatic and sustainably salty and grippy finish. Tasted in January 2020.
Until now, I hadn't tasted any wines from Wirsching for several years. The 90-hectare domain in Iphofen (Franken) has had a new cellar master since 2014, when Werner Probst retired after 31 years and was followed by the vigneron H. P. Heigel, whose first vintage was the 2015. Heigel picks earlier and doesn't just focus on the cellar work but also in the vineyard. "We have changed a lot since then," reports Andrea Wirsching, who says their canopy management allows them to produce less powerful and heavy wines but modern, refreshing and elegant Frankenweine that still comes across in the traditional Bocksbeutel, even as grands crus.
I tasted a set of different vintages, including the most recent ones. 2018 was a completely dry vintage that transformed the landscape to a steppe landscape. However, the wines became powerful but show remarkable acidity, which makes 2018 a great vintage for the Wirsching family, although the musts had to be corrected because the pH level was too high and would have caused malolactic fermentation, which is generally not wanted. 2017 wasn't an easy vintage in the end, since botrytis emerged during the harvest and had to be sorted out by hand and by a photo-mechanical installation. The highlights are the best Sylvaners from the Julius-Echter-Berg in Iphofen, whereas the Rieslings are of very good quality yet not on a really exciting level. Another top wine of the domain for many years has been the old-vines Scheurebe from the Kronsberg.
