Description
DuMol Estate is a good example of a wine estate that has grown into an absolute great in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court. Founded in 1996, DuMOL is dedicated to crafting vineyard-focused Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from distinctive locations in the cool-climate Russian River Valley. Andy Smith - the Winemaker means by vineyard focused “As a 'vineyard up' winery we stay very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.” ANDY SMITH
Winemaker, viticulturist and partner Andy Smith leads a small and experienced team at DuMOL, to create wines of depth, clarity and elegance through attention to detail in the vineyards and vintage-specific viticulture. DuMOL believes that the farmer's footsteps are the best fertilizer. Building on twenty-five years of experience, DuMOL also grows and produces small quantities of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Mencía from some of the finest vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. The entire DuMOL portfolio is released via mailing list allocations, with select wines distributed to top restaurants around the world.
Throughout DuMol's more than 25-year history, they have focused intensively on capturing the essence of their special vineyards - terropir wines. The 2020 Hyde Chardonnay is Dumol's top model and the similarity of the wine to a Grand Cru Burgundy is unmistakable. This wine has everything: flint-like aromas, mineral-infused intensity, dense deep fruit extract and extremely salty acidity. The aromas are full of freshly struck matchwood and flint, wheat toast, hazelnut and crisp orchard fruits. The wine's deep texture immediately dominates - layered and chewy with deep density and concentration. Flavors of lemon and lime oil, white peach and honeyed ginger flow and linger into a pointed, focused finish. The wine continues to develop for three or four days in an opened/uncorked bottle. Do not drink this fantastic Hyde Chardonnay too cool. We prefer around 12 degrees.
FACT: The wine is stored in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose 'Collect' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht almost next to the A16 with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard was barrel fermented and aged 12 months in 25% new oak. It offers intense aromas of guava, honeycomb and beeswax with quince paste, apple pie, nutmeg, clove and warm yellow peaches with notes of hay, crushed stone and oodles of chamomile character. Medium-bodied and wonderfully savory/toasty in the mouth, it offers great intensity, juicy acidity and a long, honey-nut finish. 550 cases produced.
Winemaker Andy Smith has been with Dumol for over 20 years. The brand has steadily grown from just a few hundred cases and now makes 16,000 to 18,000 cases a year. They are slowly tapering the purchase of grapes and are focusing on estate or leased vineyards (the word “Dumol” on the foil indicates that the wine comes from an estate vineyard). After a replanting scheme from 1997-2007, all the estate vines are between 12 and 60 years old.
Chardonnays are crafted using full malolactic but without lees stirring. “We are looking for focus, length and clarity as opposed to broad, softly textured wines,” Smith says. They are barrel fermented, aged in about 30% new oak and finished in stainless steel before bottling. Pinot Noirs see about 35% to 45% new oak, while Syrah gets 25% and Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 50% new oak. Not much whole cluster is used.
2017 was a great vintage for this estate, and Smith says, “2017 is one of my favorite vintages for Chardonnay. We had lots of tiny berries with thick skins, which plays right into our style. It was a small crop, picked extremely rapidly because of the Labor Day heat wave. We harvested about 90% of our fruit before the heat. Once the fruit is dead on the vine, there’s nothing you can do in the winery. I’d rather harvest a couple days early, for any variety—they can grow in the barrel. We are believers that the fruit that came in before the heat was the best.”

An exceptional chardonnay that has excellent structure, depth and length. Aromas of grilled lemons and peaches with a fresh array of toasted nuts and spices. The palate has great composure and impressive, ripe peaches. Long and concentrated. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is a super-classic wine from this well-known site in Carneros. Apricot, candied orange peel, mint, butter and tropical accents all flesh out in this opulent, full-throttle Chardonnay. This is what Hyde and old Wente Clone Chardonnay is all about.

Over the years, I have learned to allow for plenty of time for my tastings at DuMol. I was super-impressed with the wines I tasted on my last visit. Andy Smith continues to grow the range thoughtfully. The Chardonnays and Pinots remain the strong suits, mostly because they form the core of the range and have really been fine tuned over time. The 2017 Chardonnays have turned out just as well as I had hoped they would. The wines are rich, deep and full of character. Today, I favor the 2017s over the 2018s, which come across as lighter. Then again, the Chardonnays see pretty long élevage (by California standards) of 11 months in oak and 6 months in steel (for the vineyard designates) so there is plenty of time for the 2018s to perhaps gain a bit more dimension. The two vintages appear closer in quality for Pinot Noir. Smith opted to handle the 2018s very gently in the cellar, and did half the number of punchdowns than the norm. Both the 2017s and 2018s are vivid and super-expressive. I favor 2018 over 2017 for the Cabernets and Syrahs, as the longer and more benign growing season was clearly more favorable for both varieties.

The DuMol Estate is located in the extreme southwest of the Russian River Valley subregion in the well-known Sonoma Valley. The winery has 25 hectares in production that are cultivated according to the rules of biodynamics. The vineyards are on an eastern slope and therefore enjoy the morning sun. DuMol's vineyards are located close to the Pacific in the so-called "Cool Climate" zone. In the early morning these vineyards are covered with a thin blanket of fog and in the afternoon it becomes pleasantly warm, but a light breeze from the Pacific keeps the temperature from reaching the extreme.
DuMol Estate was created through a collaboration between Kerry Murphy and Michael Verlander. Later, the talented winemaker Andy Smith joins them. Since the beginning in 1996, DuMol has been able to produce beautiful wines, mainly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also Viognier, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon should not be missed. Most of the grapes come from Green Valley, an area that falls within the boundaries of Russian River Valley. In addition, the winery obtains grapes from several winegrowers on the basis of long-term contracts. These vintners grow their vines in Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros.
After 20 successful years, a new winery of no less than 19,600 square meters is being built. This gives DuMol a capacity of 20,000 boxes, but only 15,000 are produced annually. In this way, DuMol can guarantee its quality annually. The vinification room is equipped with the most advanced technology and arranged in such a way that world-class wines can be produced here. The viticultural approach is fully adapted to each plot with its own soil type and microclimate. DuMol's goal is to produce wines that are clean, vibrant, pure and intense. The wines are not named after the plot or the region, but after the names of clients and family members.
The winery remained under the radar of the general public for a while, partly because Michael and Kerry did little to promote their wines. Their philosophy was that quality will speak for itself. That is now getting over and the winery has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court.
“As a 'vineyard up' winery, we remain very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.”
