This is delicious and more-ish on the nose and palate with plum and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full body with silky tannins. Juicy aftertaste.

Margaux Alter Ego 2013 | $NA/Barrel
Shows macerated black currant and blackberry notes, with dark charcoal and bay leaf lining the finish. This has good flesh and drive, if just a bit short on depth overall. -- Tasted non-blind. Score Range: 87-90

From: 2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)
Red cherry jam, raspberries, white flowers and spices flesh out on the 2013 Alter Ego. A juicy, succulent wine, the Alter Ego offers lovely up-front fruit married to the bright, lively acidity of the year. Sweet floral notes reappear on the lifted finish. This is a very pretty, feminine wine with plenty of near-term appeal. There is a lot to like here. The blend is 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot.

Palmer's winemaker Thomas Duroux initially planned to start picking in early October, but rain at the end of September and the ensuing warm temperatures accelerated harvest times, as the onset of botrytis was imminent. Duroux describes 2013 as a year in which the phenolics ripened before the sugars, which is unusual. Yields were 25 hectoliters per hectare. The fruit came in at about 12.5% natural alcohol, which Duroux felt was not quite enough to balance acidity, so the wines were lightly chaptalized by 0.5%. Fermentations were done at lower temperatures with the goal of gentle extraction, while total time on the skins was a little shorter than normal. The wines were racked into barrel for the malolactic fermentations and the blends were assembled in March. In 2013, the Grand Vin represents just 1/3rd of the production, the rest went into Alter Ego, and that is after roughly 10% of the lots were discarded from both wines. Although much of Palmer has been farmed biodynamically for some years, the estate will be 100% biodynamic with the 2014 harvest.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
