Description
Beautiful organic Riesling from the Kremstal in Niederösterreich, Austria's most important wine region. The Kremstal area is located on both sides of the Danube, around the city of Krems. Producer of this delightful Riesling is the Geyerhof quality winery whose vineyards lie on the south side of the Danube below the famous Göttweig monastery. Wine is the focus of daily life on Geyerhof. Joy and respect for life determine the actions and method.
The winery was first mentioned in the municipality archives in the 12th century and has been in the family's hands since the 16th century. Ilse and Josef Maier have passionately cultivated 23 hectares of vineyards here since 1988. Maria & Josef, the following generations, have joined the family business since 2015. Mase and her son make organic wines that are juicy and friendly at Geyerhof in Kremstal.
This Riesling Goldberg is complex on the nose with ripe tropical fruit, citrus, honey and mint. The wine also has a light sweetness, elegant acids and a huge aftertaste. Drunk young, this Riesling Goldberg is charming and shy. However, storing this wine for a few years is very beneficial! The wine is then a firework of ripe fruit with a hint of honey, ripe apricots, melon and fine notes of meadow herbs, delicate acids and rich in extract; juicy, full of finesse with a great long finish. This wine can be widely used at the table with most fish and seafood dishes, white meat, spicy Eastern dishes and with a sweet dessert.
The Goldberg vineyards are located on southern slopes with a unique, very warm microclimate. The vines are more than 60 years old. The grapes are harvested manually at the end of October, pressed with the whole bunch, after which natural fermentation takes place very slowly in stainless steel tanks. Geyerhof always chooses to release the wines later, among other things because their natural fermentation often proceeds slowly and the wines therefore do not present so well the year after harvest. 2016 Was a wet year in Kremstal until the beginning of August. A huge challenge, especially if you work organically! The moderate flowering was a blessing in the end: the limited number of racemes matured well in August and September and could be brought in well up to October. The limited quantities ensured nice concentration, the cool vintage for elegance and fineness and the necessary acids to be able to mature.

Tasted from the vat, the 2016 Ried Goldberg 1ÖTW Riesling was still cloudy and yeasty in late June 2017. Coming from a very warm, south-facing terroir located in a topographic basin, it is a rich and lush Riesling based on super ripe (partly overripe?) and concentrated grapes that give the wine a rich and slightly raisiny character. Its texture is rather smooth, soft and juicy, but it is structured by delicate acidity and fine tannins. The 2016 Goldberg is promising but still an unfinished wine that I'd like to follow over the years with great interest.
Ilse, Maria and Josef Maier are behind this family-owned and organic 23-hectare domain in Oberfucha (Kremstal). They have produced terrific 1ÖTW crus from Riesling and Grüner Veltliner in both the 2015 and 2016 vintages. The wines are perhaps even better in 2016: elegant, fruity, well structured, balanced and with good aging potential. However, it is the Grüner Veltliner Gutsreserve from 2008 that is the highlight of the current program. Aged in barrels for 7.5 years, this wine shows how much complexity we'd gain if we had the patience to let the wines ripen long enough. In this case, the Maiers did the job, and the pleasure is ours.

Geyerhof winery is located in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in the Kremstal wine-growing region. The farm was first mentioned in the municipality archives in the 12th century and has been family owned since the 16th century. With passion, Ilse and Josef Maier have cultivated 23 hectares of vineyards here according to organic regulations since 1988. Since 2015, Maria & Josef, the next generations, have joined the family business. lse Maier and her son make organic wines that are juicy and friendly at Geyerhof in the Kremstal on the south side of the Danube.
Most of Kremstal is on the north side of the Danube, around the town of Krems, but Geyerhof is on the south side, below the famous Göttweig monastery. Ilse Maier grows grapes here on vineyards with different types of soil, such as loess, sand and gravel. The vineyards take advantage of their optimal location and proximity to the River Danube. The striking temperature differences between day and night reinforce the complexity of these top quality wines. Of course she makes beautiful Grüner Veltliner, but also a friendly Zweigelt and Riesling with unprecedented storage potential (Goldberg). Wines with a very juicy style, with sufficient freshness and fully organic certified.
Wine is the focus of everyday life at Geyerhof. Joy and respect for life determine the actions and working method.
Organic viticulture
Geyerhof is located in Kremstal. Most of Kremstal is on the north side of the Danube, around the town of Krems, but Geyerhof is on the south side, below the famous Göttweig monastery. Ilse Maier grows grapes here on 15 hectares of vineyards with different types of soil, such as loess, sand and gravel.
Organic viticulture is the biggest challenge in Geyerhof's efforts to continuously improve quality. It is often like a tightrope walker without a net. It requires in-depth knowledge, enormous sensitivity and a willingness to take risks. Organic cultivation is more than just deprivation of chemicals. A prerequisite is the knowledge that the laws of nature are unchangeable. Recognizing these laws and living with them has been a matter of course for thousands of years. It is a constant balance between nature and civilization. In practice, this requires meticulous and demanding manual work. A small mistake, a small omission over the course of a wine year can have disastrous consequences. Vines can only thrive on healthy soils in the long term and only then can the terroir really express itself in the wines. The basis for exceptional wines is always the vineyard.
Geyerhof winery has been organically certified by Austria Bio Guarantee since 1988. The know-how gained in the past 25 years in organic wine growing has been achieved with great courage and patience and has been financially costly. However, the result of all efforts is impressive, and that is great wines of more than excellent quality.
