Description
The 2013 Schreckbichl Colterenzio Alto Adige Bianco Riserva LR has a unique packaging. The labels are all hand numbered (only 5,131 bottles were made) and the bottle is placed in a metal mesh and then in a beautiful gift box. The 2013 Alto Adige Bianco Riserva LR is a wine with an intriguing appeal. It makes an elegant and distinctive impression on the table and the wine inside is worthy of the exclusive packaging. This is a dry and compact blend of 65% Chardonnay, 15% Sauvignon, 15% Pinot Bianco and 5% Gewürztraminer with a decisive mineral vein forming the backbone. It offers elegantly refined notes of stone fruit and white almond. The wine reveals a budding tertiary definition that tends to underline those distinctive mineral notes. Fine acidity as is typical of wines from the Alto Adige.
LR are the initials of Luis Raifer, who gave impetus to this wine. Luis Raifer was for many years President and General Manager of Cantina Colterenzio and a pioneer in promoting authentic and prestigious grape cultivation in Alto Adige. Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc are the varieties of this elegant and unique cuvée, which refines on the lees and in oak and is presented in a feminine, refined packaging.
About Schreckbichl Colterenzio
Schreckbichl Colterenzio , also known as Kellerei Schreckbichl in German or Cantina Colterenzio in Italian, is a leading winery in the South Tyrol region (Alto Adige), in northern Italy. Founded in 1960 as a cooperative of around 28 winegrowers, the winery now has over 300 members. Known for its focus on quality and innovation, Schreckbichl Colterenzio produces both white and red wines from grapes grown on the steep slopes of the Alps.
Location and terroir
Schreckbichl Colterenzio is located in the village of Girlan (Cornaiano) near Bolzano , in the heart of South Tyrol. This region has a unique microclimate, influenced by both the Alps and the warm Mediterranean climate from the south. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 230 to 650 meters above sea level, which creates a large temperature difference between day and night. This difference contributes to the freshness and aromatic intensity of the wines.
The soils are very varied, with limestone, clay, sand and volcanic rock, which contributes to the diversity and complexity of the wines. The region is ideal for both white and red grapes, with a focus on native and international varieties.
Grape varieties and wines
Schreckbichl Colterenzio produces a wide range of wines, both white and red.
White wines:
- Pinot Grigio : One of the region's best-known grapes, these wines have a lively freshness with notes of apple, pear and citrus, often combined with a subtle mineral touch.
- Gewürztraminer : This aromatic grape produces wines with intense scents of roses, lychee and spices, typical of South Tyrol.
- Sauvignon Blanc : Colterenzio also makes expressive Sauvignon wines with aromas of green apple, citrus, and herbaceous notes.
- Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco (Weißburgunder) are also important, producing fresh, mineral and sometimes wood-aged wines with complexity and structure.
Red wines:
- Lagrein : A native grape of South Tyrol that produces deep, full-bodied red wines with notes of black fruit, chocolate and an earthy undertone.
- Schiava (Vernatsch) : A light and fresh red typical of the region, with aromas of cherries and a soft structure.
- Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) : Colterenzio produces refined and elegant Pinot Noirs, which thrive in the cool, mountainous climate.

I've never seen packaging quite like what you get here. The 750 ml bottle is wrapped in a sock of metal mesh. The 2013 Alto Adige Bianco Riserva LR is a wine of intriguing attractiveness. It makes an elegant and distinctive impression on the table. Happily, the wine inside is worthy of what must be a very expensive bottle to produce. This is a dry and compact blend of 65% Chardonnay, 15% Sauvignon, 15% Pinot Bianco and 5% Gewürztraminer with a decisive mineral vein that forms the backbone. It offers elegantly finessed tones of stone fruit and white almond. The wine reveals budding tertiary definition that tends to underline those distinctive mineral notes.
Maximilian Niedermayr and his winemaking team have made a few interesting changes to their portfolio. First, a Chardonnay has been added to the top-shelf Lafóa line. An air-dried Gewürztraminer was also added, although I did not have the opportunity to taste that wine. The Lafóa line sees even more stringent rules on vineyard yields and fruit selection. The Lafóa line did not see some of its red wines produced in the difficult 2014 vintage. In fact, they skipped production of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The other news is the 2013 Alto Adige Bianco Riserva LR. This is a delightful wine both in form and substance.

This is an exotic bottle with dried mangoes and lemon curd and an underlying lime and pie-crust character. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. Peach pie on the finish. Sizzling acidity. Fantastic balance. A new white from here, released after extended aging.
