Description
This is one of the absolute top wines from Montalcino from the Casanova di Neri domain. This wine was the first Brunello where the highest quality was strived for and where the land was worked with great respect. The grapes were picked manually in September. The grapes were then fermented for a period of 23 days. The maturation of this wine took place for a period of 29 months in French oak barrels of 500 liters, after which further maturation in the bottle continued for at least another year. This producer belongs to the new generation of Brunello producers. The company started in 1971, when Giovanni Neri bought the largest domain in the Montalcino area. The domain covers a total of 39 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards. The oldest vineyard is 50 years old. The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 350 meters above sea level. Casanova di Neri is one of the best producers of Brunello wines.
Weather-wise, the 2010 growing season saw a good amount of rain spread throughout the summer, with mild average temperatures. All things that helped deliver perfectly ripe grapes on the phenolic side with sugar and acidity in perfect balance like we haven't had in a long time. Clear aroma of violets, ripe black cherries, spices, balsamic notes, graphite and licorice. Large and sweet tannins, endless mouthfeel with a very long sweet aftertaste in the style of Cerretalto. All this is blended with great harmony. High aging potential. It should be served at 16-17 C°, opening the bottle at least 2-3 hours in advance or alternatively decanting it gently.
Manual harvest, from October 15 to 16, 2010. Fermentation and maceration proceeded naturally, using only gravity to get the grapes into open cone-shaped fermenters, with a falling system for 32 days. The wine has been allowed to rest in wooden barrels for 30 months and bottle aging for 30 months. 100/100 Parker & Suckling

Here is a stunning wine that exudes excellence in primary material and winemaking craft. Man and nature come together with perfect precision and harmony in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. The balance is exquisite. Bold cherry and blackberry notes are followed by crushed mineral, licorice, smoke and lightly fragrant cedar. The wine also shows convincing power and volume. It spreads evenly over the palate, and its flavor intensity can be counted over many long minutes. Cerretalto is beautifully concentrated and rich, but it is never too heavy or dense. This is an Italian icon that is still drinking young now, but it has an exciting world of possibility ahead. I think we'd all like to come along for the ride.
This is one of the tastings I had most been looking forward to all year. Giacomo Neri and his son Giovanni produced one of my favorite wines in 2015 (the 100 point Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova). In addition to the wines reviewed here, I had the opportunity to organize the most complete vertical of Cerretalto (1981-2010) ever in the history of that single vineyard wine. It was also the last vertical to be staged at Casanova di Neri, because four of the vintages in that collection are now gone forever from the winery library. Because I don't want to distract from these new releases, I will publish my Cerretalto vertical after this Brunello report comes out. In the meantime, I spent a lot of time studying Casanova di Neri's current releases. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is a perfect wine save for the fact that I liked the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova just a tiny fraction of a micro percentage more. I tasted both wines together blind in every configuration I could think of and went through six bottles to be extra sure of my findings. I tasted them both immediately after opening the bottles and then at different intervals up to 24 hours later. The 2010 Cerretalto is arguably a more complete and a deeper wine, but it also feels slightly more propped up by that extra year of cellar aging and more pronounced oak spice. I loved the free and unhinged nature of Tenuta Nuova that exudes its true Sangiovese personality. Cerretalto, on the other hand, excels in terms of intensity, quality and winemaking, but it doesn't reflect the territory of Montalcino, to my mind, as faithfully as Tenuta Nuova. If the Montalcino signature is less important to you, you may well prefer Cerretalto. Either way, you can't go wrong with anything Casanova di Neri has produced in the exceptional 2010 vintage.

CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO CERRETALTO 2010
Wednesday, November 9, 2016
Country : Italy
Region : Tuscany
Vintage : 2010
Score : 100
This is very tannic and powerful with loads of currants, spices and hints of wood. So much stone and mineral character to this. Violets, too. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Massively dense yet agile and bright. It goes on for minutes. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try in 2020.
