De Boekenhoutskloof The Journeyman is een zeer bijzondere wijn van Marc Kent en Gottfried Mocke die alleen in de allerbeste jaren wordt gemaakt! Er zijn tot nu slechts 7 jaargangen van deze wijn uitgebracht. De wijn is vernoemd naar Marc's cockney-overgrootvader wiens geboorteakte het beroep van zijn vader vermeldde als "Journeyman". Terwijl hij door oude familiedocumenten bladerde, ontdekte Marc deze notatie en sloot hij aan bij de visie van Boekenhoutskloof bij het produceren van een topwijn van de thuisboerderij in Franschhoek.
Deze 2020 The Journeyman is de opvolger van de 2017 vintage. Omdat de wijngaard van Franschhoek alleen perfect rijpt in bepaalde jaargangen, is deze alleen geproduceerd in de topjaren: ‘05, ‘07, ‘09, ‘11, ‘15, ‘17 en '20. De 2020 Journeyman is zeer elegante en verfijnd. Het is gemaakt uit een selectie van de beste vaten. De wijn is ontzettend zuiver met mooi vers fruit met zachte, gedetailleerde en kalkachtige tannines. Het lange, verfijnde romige gehemelte toont de pure klasse. Vintage 2020 is een 50:50 blend geproduceerd uit twee geselecteerde vaten, elk van Cabernet Franc en Cabernet Sauvignon.
Boekenhoutskloof is een spraakmakend wijngoed in Franschhoek dat vooral in kwalitatief opzicht imponerend is. Boekenhoutskloof is, ondanks zijn voor het 'Franse' Franschhoek wat ongebruikelijke Afrikaanse naam, drie eeuwen geleden gesticht door Franse Hugenoten. Ook de huidige wijnmaker Marc Kent heeft nog altijd iets met Frankrijk. Hij gaat er minstens eenmaal per jaar op bezoek om in de noordelijke Rhône, Cornas, nieuwe inspiratie op te doen. In 2020 is Boekenhoutskloof verkozen tot beste Winery van zuid Afrika door Platter. Op de kop van de capsule vindt u een afbeelding van een slanke dame. Dit is het boegbeeld van Boekenhoutskloof en is een bewerking van een vroeg zilvermerk van Kaap de Goede Hoop en ze draagt de duif van vrede en hoop. Ze bewaakt het Boekenhoutskloof en staat voor intrinsieke kwaliteit die boven alles staat.

The 2011 The Journeyman is a blend of 67% Cabernet Franc and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit sourced from the estate, fully destemmed then fermented in oak barriques, finally aged for 26 months in oak barriques. The nose is very refined and poised with blackberry, briar notes, allspice and touches of cedar and bell pepper – capturing the essence of Cabernet Franc with panache. The palate is medium-bodied, very well-balanced with crisp acidity. Fine symmetry here, very elegant with touches of dark chocolate smoothing out the refined finish. Just three barrels produced and not a single bottle sold – they are given away by Mark Kent or dropped into mixed cases.
Marc Kent (who seems to look slightly different every time I meet him) is Franschhoek’s most respected winemaker, someone whose contribution to South Africa’s renaissance cannot be overstated, not just at the top level through Boekenhoutskloof, but via his hugely successful Wolftrap and Porcupine Ridge labels. In my last report, I suggested that nobody can rest on their laurels and that everyone needs to look forward and progress. Marc Kent is no different. He is switched on to the demands of the future, which is evident in what you might describe the gradual "toning down" of his wines in recent years. Part of his long-term strategy is to instill more regional identity into his wines, so for example “The Chocolate Block” that hitherto has been designated the rather amorphous “Western Cape” Wine of Origin, will be Swartland from 2015, while from 2014 the Syrah moves from Wellington to Porselainberg. In tandem with changes in terms of sourcing grapes, there are changes in the winery. “We have invested in more foudres,” he explained. “We’ve bought Stockinger and Pauscha and used less barriques across the ranges, including the Chocolate Block. The only component that sees new wood is the Cabernet Sauvignon. We’ve found that the wines are more integrated after élevage.” The Porcupine Ridge label has been a massive success in both the UK and Canada, whereas in the United States Wolftrap is much more popular (see separate entry). For an introduction to South Africa, this remains a great place to start.

Gorgeous aromas of freshly brewed Kenya AA coffee, cedar and warm, shaved vanilla lead to a supple, focused beam of red currant, plum sauce, mineral and sanguine notes. Long and very fine-grained, with a lingering hint of mesquite that stretches out the alluring finish. This is concentrated, but built more around elegance and poise. Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2013. 120 cases made.

(two barriques of Cabernet Franc and one of Cabernet Sauvignon; hand-destemmed, with the berries going directly into barrel for a long maceration on their skins; never pumped): Intense dark fruit aromas of blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry and violet, along with a penetrating oakiness. Dense, savory and deep, offering outstanding intensity and depth to its sweet berry fruit flavors. Shows little of the green element of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Finishes pure and very long, with superb energy and suave tannins.

Partner and co-owner Marc Kent has been venturing farther afield in recent years to buy prime vineyard land and initiate new ventures. The home base at the foot of Franschhoek's mountains is now farmed organically, and most of the original vines on the property have been replaced by Cabernet Franc, which does especially well in this cool spot. "For the first 15 years, we farmed grapes all over the Western Cape," Kent told me in April. "But it's dangerous to create brands based on other peoples' real estate." So Kent and his financial partners began purchasing properties in the exciting Swartland in 2009 (they own Porseleinberg) and now own 70 hectares of vines, with plans to grow to 130 in the next few years. Boekenhoutskloof also bought the old Helderberg co-op, where they make their very successful Porcupine Ridge wines as well as part of their Chocolate Block, a Syrah-based blend made in large quantities (over 35,000 cases annually). "Our wines used to be about power but they're more about elegance now, thanks in large part to the Porseleinberg fruit," said Kent.

Hij is niet bang om te experimenteren met het onconventionele, maar zijn voornaamste inzet is kwaliteit op elk niveau en in elk detail. Marc is net zo toegewijd aan de voortdurende ontwikkeling en groei van Boekenhoutskloof als aan de grotere Zuid-Afrikaanse wijnindustrie. Hij is vanaf de oprichting actief betrokken geweest bij de Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourism Association als bestuurslid en heeft de Vignerons de Franschhoek meerdere malen voorgezeten. Door de investeringen van Boekenhoutskloof in de wijnstreek Swartland, werd hij een van de oprichters van de Swartland Revolution en Swartland Independent Producers Association.
Bio-diversiteit en zuinig zijn op deze aarde is een belangrijk element en wordt ver doorgevoerd. Om de unieke biodiversiteit te behouden van hun terrein, verwijdert men alle invasieve uitheemse planten van de boerderij - dus de zaken die er van nauture niet horen. Grote delen van de berg zijn al gerooid van pijnbomen en gombomen. Het herstel van het kwetsbare rivierengebied en de herintroductie van verschillende proteasoorten zijn aan de gang. Boekenhoutskloof is een van de oprichters van de Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy (samen met Haut Espoir), een initiatief om de samenwerking tussen buren te verbeteren en om het brandbeheer en het behoud van fynbos in de vallei te verbeteren.
Thuis in Franschhoek heeft Marc kent naam gemaakt met kanjers van wijnen als Boekenhoutskloof Semillon, Syrah en Cabernet Sauvignon, die stuk voor stuk tot de absolute top van Zuid-Afrika behoren. Maar Kent heeft nog meer pijlen op zijn boog. Naast deze slechts in geringe hoeveelheden geproduceerde paradepaardjes maakt hij onder de naam Porcupine Ridge en The Wolftrap namelijk ook buitengewoon attractieve wijnen die voor een breder publiek beschikbaar zijn. Op een wat hoger niveau behoort hier ook zeker The Chocolate Block bij. In 2020 is Boekenhoutskloof verkozen tot beste Winery door Platter
Weetje: Op de kop van de capsule vindt u een afbeelding van een slanke dam. Dit is het boegbeeld van Boekenhoutskloof en is een bewerking van een vroeg zilvermerk van Kaap de Goede Hoop en ze draagt de duif van vrede en hoop. Ze bewaakt het Boekenhoutskloof en staat voor intrinsieke kwaliteitdiemen boven alles staat.
