Omschrijving
Paolo Scavino, een Italiaans wijnhuis van ongekende klasse, produceerde deze fantastische Barolo Bric del Fiasc. In de Fiasc wijngaard kruisen de Tortonian- en Helvetian-bodems (witgrijze kalksteen en geelgrijze zandsteen) elkaar en combineren ze grote finesse en kracht. De wijngaard wordt gezien als één van de meest complexe terroirs vermoedelijk vanwege de centraal gelegen positie in de Barolo regio. Deze Bric del Fiasc Barolo vertegenwoordigt ten volle de klassieke expressie van de Nebbiolo die rustig de tijd nodig heeft om al zijn complexiteit te ontwikkelen. Deze krachtige, sappige en gespierde wijn vol complexiteit is mooi dieprood van kleur en heeft stevige houttonen. Karakteristiek voor deze Barolo is de textuur: aardse indrukken, dichtheid van fruit, levendige en verfijnde tannines. Prachtige structuur ondersteund door een prettige zuurgraad. Op de neus complex, mineralig en balsemico-achtig met de voor deze wijn typische tonen van klein rood fruit (kers, bramen) en zoethout. Deze wijn past goed bij rood vlees (gegrild/geroosterd), lamsvlees, pelswild en kaassoorten die rijk en krachtig van smaak zijn.
De 2016 is zonder twijfel een van de mooiste jaren. De scores geven dit ook aan. Decanteren in zijn jonge jaren.

Drawing its fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc shows dimension, depth, precision and power. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with a saturated hue, leading to a full, all-encompassing bouquet. The Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is often the most representative wine in the Scavino portfolio, and never has this been more true than in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, licorice, spice and ferrous earth build a fluid and multifaceted bouquet. The mouthfeel sits firm and tight on the palate today, promising to evolve and soften tomorrow. This is a bottle for your cellar.

The 2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a powerful, muscular wine. Youthfully austere and tannic, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to come around, but it is magnificent, even in the early going. Layers of building tannins enshroud a core of dark Nebbiolo fruit, with hints of dried herbs, iron, leather and sweet tobacco that develop with a bit of coaxing. As always, Bric del Fiasc has a feral intensity to it. The 2016 is an especially fine edition and also a terrific example of the style of this Castiglione Falletto site.

This is an absolutely fabulous collection of Barolos from the Scavino family. In recent years, the Scavinos have expanded their enviable portfolio of holdings with acquisitions in Monvigliero, Ravera and Prapò, along with other parcels that currently are not bottled separately, but used for the straight Barolo. Two thousand sixteen is the first vintage in which oak vats were introduced for fermentation. The Ravera, in which one of two fermentation vats was oak, provides some clues as to what that might hold for the future. Most of the Barolos are aged in a combination of small and large oak, a choice driven largely by practical considerations of managing volume, but those aged in cask have a degree of transparency that is really exciting, especially given the quality of these vineyards in an exceptional vintage. Scavino fans can also look forward to a Riserva along the lines of the 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo as well as a Riserva from Rocche dell'Annunziata. After a few years of some inconsistency, the 2016s suggest Scavino is back big time. These Barolos are compelling.

Wijnhuis Paolo Scavino is een historische wijnmakerij in de Italiaanse regio Barolo. Het werd in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto opgericht door Lorenzo Scavino en zijn zoon Paolo. Landbouw is altijd een familietraditie en passie geweest van de familie Scavino.
Nu runt Enrico Scavino samen met zijn dochters Enrica en Elisa, de 4e generatie, het familiedomein. Hij werkte al in de wijnmakerij in 1951 toen hij nog maar 10 jaar oud was. Een jonge wijnmaker die de passie en toewijding van zijn land, heeft geërfd. Door meer dan 60 jaar ervaring is zijn focus geweest op het investeren in de belangrijke cru van Nebbiolo om het unieke karakter van elk terroir te kunnen laten zien. De werkwijze van dit prachtige wijnhuis is geïnspireerd door de liefde en het respect dat ze hebben voor hun terroirs. Ook hun streven naar zuiverheid van expressie, complexiteit en elegantie voor hun wijnen is een grote inspiratiebron. Het wijnhuis werkt met de 3 lokale druiven Dolcetto, Barbera en Nebbiolo.
Wijnhuis Paolo Scavino bezit 29 hectare in het Barolo gebied, en werkt aan 20 historische Barolo crus in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d'Alba, Verduno en Roddi. De familie Scavino onderscheidt zich door de nauwgezette zorg voor de wijngaarden en hun passie voor het terroir. Ze leggen de focus op de verzorging van de wijnstokken om zo rijpe en gezonde druiven te kunnen laten groeien.
