Comtes Lafon is een hoog aangeschreven wijnproducent die bekend staat om het produceren van uitzonderlijke wijnen in de Bourgogne (Frankrijk). Dominique Lafon, de eigenaar en wijnmaker, is een gerespecteerd figuur in de wereld van de wijn. Comtes Lafon heeft een rijke geschiedenis die meerdere generaties teruggaat. Het landgoed werd gesticht in het begin van de 19e eeuw en Dominique Lafon heeft de wijntraditie van de familie met groot succes voortgezet. Het wijnhuis is gelegen in het dorp Meursault, gelegen in de subregio Côte de Beaune van de Bourgogne. Meursault staat bekend om zijn hoogwaardige Chardonnay's met een vettig en mineralig karakter. Het landgoed bezit en produceert uit verschillende wijngaarden in Meursault, maar ook uit andere appellaties in de Bourgogne, zoals Volnay en Monthélie.
De Meursault 1er Cru Charmes komt erg goed tot zijn recht en onthult aroma's van peer, frisse gele steenvruchten, verse perzik, amandelspijs en witte bloemen, gevolgd door een medium tot volle body. De Premier Cru Charmes staat bekend als een van de percelen die meer krachtige en volle Meursault's produceren. Hoog in balans en meer expressies van hout in de wijn. Het bewaarpotentieel van deze perceel ligt aanzienlijk hoger dan andere plots in Meursault. De wijn rijpt op 100% nieuw Frans eikenhouten vaten. Geheel in de stijl van Dominique Lafon is dit een elegante wijn met veel finesse en diepgang.

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is superb, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp peaches, apples, dried white flowers, honeycomb and oatmeal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core, vibrant acids and a long finish. There's plenty of tight-knit structure and dry extract here, so this should be a long-lived Charmes.
The 2017 vintage is an excellent year for Domaine des Comtes Lafon, where Dominique Lafon and his team seem to have attained a new level of consistency since the 2009 vintage. After the better part of two decades' experimentation and refinement, Lafon has found a mature aesthetic. What's more, he has devoted considerable attention to the question of premature oxidation, and today monitors dissolved oxygen levels at racking and bottling closely. Since the 2013 vintage, all the domaine's wines have also been bottled under Diam technical corks, and free sulfur levels and bottling practices have been adjusted accordingly. The result is wines that now realize much more reliably the quality they show in barrel. Satiny and succulent, these are some of the most charming wines in Meursault, beautifully defined by their respective climats. And 2017 is a fine vintage in red at this address, featuring for the first time a Volnay Champans derived almost exclusively from the domaine's 1921 plantings in this serious premier cru.

From: 2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)
(the crop was normal at 50 hectoliters per hectare; bottled last week): Bright, light yellow. Deep but precise aromas of lemon, orange and hazelnut, with a hint of reduction. Densely packed and seamless, with its serious thickness of texture leavened by a strong impression of acidity. Conveys a crystallized citrus zest character, with firm acidity carrying and extending the fruit through a very graceful finish. Classic Charmes, made almost entirely from vines just below Perrières.

Production at this top estate was cut dramatically by frost in 2016. To cite just two extreme examples, Dominique Lafon made 5 barrels of village Meursault, vs. a normal 50, and 8 barrels of Clos de la Barre, compared to a normal 55. He also produced just a single barrel of Meursault Désirée from his half a hectare of vines, which according to my calculations is the equivalent of 4.5 hectoliters per hectare. And yet Lafon told me that he doesn’t find obvious differences between his frosted and non-frosted wine in ’16. “There were contre-bourgeons in 2016, only the first set of buds,” he explained. “If our first set of buds survived, that’s what we made the wine from.” Due to the tiny crop, Lafon purchased no new barrels in 2016, and last year he described these wines as “charming and pleasant,” comparing them to the 2000s.

(Lafon put together a representative sample of the final wine, which will be a blend of three vines ages: 25, 50 and 90 years; production here was nearly 50 hectoliters per hectare): Bright lemon-yellow. Aromas of lemon and orange juice are enlivened by a mineral element. Plush, generous and sweet; in a distinctly broad, gentle, harmonious style. Citrus and spice flavors display early charm but the slowly building, tactile finish suggests that this wine will evolve gracefully. In a somewhat lighter style than the more serious 2015, but every bit as refined.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon werd oorspronkelijk opgericht door Jules Joseph Barthélémy Lafon, geboren in 1864. Hij trouwde in januari 1894 met Marie Boch, wiens familie al wijnhandelaren en landgoedeigenaren was in Meursault. Hij breidde het landgoed uit en kocht in het begin van de 20e eeuw verschillende belangrijke percelen aan zoals: Le Montrachet Grand Cru, de Meursault 1er Crus “Les Perrières”, “Les Charmes” en “Les Genevrières”, Volnay 1er Crus “Santenots” en “Clos des Chênes”. In 1961 werd de volledige productie van Domaine des Comtes Lafon op het landgoed gebotteld en verhuisde hij definitief van Parijs naar Meursault. Productie van Comtes Lafon
Dominique Lafon is een voorstander van biodynamische landbouwpraktijken, waarbij duurzaamheid en de gezondheid van het ecosysteem van de wijngaard voorop staan.
